As the year draws to a close, it's time to reminisce on the games played in 2020, and let me tell you, not to flex or anything, but I played A LOT of games, due to the pandemic. Since this was a great opportunity to knock out some games in the backlog, I played WAY too many good games, so I had to increase the limit from 10 to 15! Before I get into the list, let me clarify how the games I'm considering weren't all released in 2020. Instead, I'm including games that I'VE played in 2020. Also, at the end of the list, I'll include the full list of games, for those curious about what is being considered. With that out of the way, here's my top 15 list.
Starting off is Dreams, an underrated gem of a game that didn't garner a lot of attention. With it being a game creation tool, the potential players have shown off is super immpressive. While the tool isn't very user-friendly, the amount of respect I have for this game, and the amount of fun I had with it deserves to be on this list.
While some may see this as a trendy game that died off very quickly, I see Fall Guys being the most fun I've ever had in a battle royale game. Whether playing with friends or in my own time, I sunk a lot more time into Fall Guys than expected, and with the sheer fun this game offers, I had to put it on the list.
Finally got around to playing this cult classic, and Chrono Trigger did not dissapoint. The whole game has this charm and emotion, and for an SNES title, you can really see how much it paved the way for JRPGs, or maybe even games as a whole. Talk about a surprise game. Announced in September, and released a couple of months later, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was such a fun trip back to Hyrule. Say what you will about the game, but the gameplay, story, cutscenes, characters, replayability; all of that just makes Age of Calamity such a memorable experience.
Another one of the greats was knocked out of my backlog, and let me tell you, when many say RE4 is the best game ever, I can see why. The whole entire design of the game is like no other, and was really ahead of its time. Even today, RE4 was one of the most impressive games I've played. Similar to Age of Calamity, Paper Mario: The Origami King came out of nowhere. Announced in May and released a couple of months later, many were scared to see where the Paper Mario series of games would go, and I'm very glad that they took more risks, and gave us one of the best Paper Mario experiences to date. Monster Hunter World was a great start as someone who's never played a Monster Hunter game before. Since I played with friends (and definitely the way to go) exploring the beautiful areas, fighting a ton of monsters, and drinking in the gathering hub, Monster Hunter World will always be a game I'll remember with high praise.
Once again, knocked out a game that's been on my backlog for some time. The World Ends with You blew me away when I played it. Everything about it was stunning, striking, and with A LOT of bangers. I cannot recommend The World Ends with You anymore. It's a cult classic that should be played by everyone even remotely curious about it.
One game I was not expecting to like as much as I did was Marvel's Spider-Man. Having the whole experience be a playable Marvel movie was a great call, and to top it off, the game is such a treat from start to finish. Possibly the most controvertial place on this list is The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II. For starters, TLOU1 was a game that's always been hyped up, and when I played it for the first time in preparation for TLOU2, I had my jaw on the floor. Everything about the game is pretty much how games in the future should view game design. It's that good. Now with TLOU2, say what you will about the story (yes I'm still sad about THAT too), but you can't deny how much of a masterpiece it still is. From the amout of polish, to the perfected gameplay, TLOU2, while it does have its fair share of problems, I can say does hold up well as a sequel to one of the most praised games ever.
Once again, a game that's been on my backlog for years has been beaten, and MAN, Catherine Full Body is a terrific game. It surprised me how much detail and effort went into this game's themes, characters, story, gameplay, etc. All of it never got boring, and kept me invested all throughout. The game that helped practically every gamer through this year, Animal Crossing New Horizons continues what Animal Crossing is known for: a comfy life simulator that will devour hundreds of hours of your life away. With improvements upon prior games, colorful graphics, and a soothing soundtrack that never gets old, Animal Crossing New Horizons deserves a spot here for keeping me sane during this pandemic.
This year, I got into the Devil May Cry series of games, and if I had to pick which one I liked out of all of them, it'll have to be Devil May Cry 5. This game put a smile on my face from start to finish. With the best combat out of any game I've played, and with a head-banging soundtrack to boot, Devil May Cry 5 may be, if not is Capcom's greatest game yet. Before I pop off about P5R, Persona 5 is one of my favorite games of all time, and with Persona 5 Royal coming out this year, I was able to relive my first playthrough all over again, and help me realise why Persona 5 is one of my favorite games. I can go on and on about the style, the music, the characters, etc, but I will say that Persona 5 Royal just takes what Persona 5 is (a fantastic JRPG with the best mechanics and game design out there), and continued to innovate what was already established in Persona 5. I absolutely love it.
Now while Persona 5 Royal is a really great game, it is simply a remaster of the original game. Which is why my game of the year for 2020 is Final Fantasy VII Remake. Taking what was a historical, important, and nostalgic game, and retelling the story in an unbelievable way, as a fan of the original, I had my mind bloen countless times. The music sounding remade for a modern age, the battle system being re-done for a wider audience, the characters not being reworked but instead modernized and simply updated. Final Fantasy VII Remake just had me laughing with joy, tearing up, popping off to some of the most memerable moments of the year. All of that is the reason why Final Fantasy VII Remake is my game of the year.
Hope you enjoyed my top 15 list of games! Below is the list of games I've played this year, in case you want to see all that games I put into consideration. The asterisks indicate honorable mentions, and most likely were the hardest ones to leave out of this list. Again, thank you for reading, and have a Happy New Year.
