Unpacking is a nice short and sweet game. Doesn’t need too much of your attention, doesn’t ask much of you, isn’t too demanding of a game. It’s just good vibes as you explore the life of the protagonist. She goes unnamed, but its more so teetered towards the player, as the game is logged in a journal. You write your name in the journal, and unpack this virtual life, through the means of this girl. I think it’s smart, as it feels a lot more personal. It doesn’t feel like you’re unpacking her room, you’re unpacking yours. Just ignore the bras, you packed them yourself.
This game is pretty much perfect for the vibes. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s literally just unpacking boxes. It’s so soothing, with a soundtrack to fit each area, each era of a life; it’s very clever with how this game is formatted. So I’ll just go over some nitpicks I have. The first one has nothing to do with the game, it’s just a me-thing. I think it’s funny though, so I’m including it here. There were multiple times where I unpack an item, and I genuinely would have no clue what the item was LOL. I’d have to ask others what it was, and then they’d understand what it is as soon as they see it. So yeah, it’s just funny on my end, it’s not the game. If anything, this game has a beautiful aesthetic. Super detailed in every aspect, from the backgrounds, down to the details no one would notice unless they go out of their way for it.
One issue I do have with the game, is that I wish there were a free mode. The game is kinda restrictive on where you can put things. Like of course things that belong in the kitchen have to go in the kitchen, and things like that, but I wish there was an option to just go WILD. Like put the microwave in the bed, or the pig plush in the shoe rack. Appeal to both sides of the spectrum by having the chillest game out there for those who want to play seriously, and those like me who want to make it the worst house to live in.
But other than that, this game is wonderful. I recommend it to anyone who doesn’t know what to do and have 2-3 hours to kill. It’s on game pass, so why not y’know.
