Okay I think I'm ready to talk about the original Resident Evil. I feel very conflicted about this game ngl. Let me start with the good.

The good in RE1 is the atmosphere. That was one of the first things I noticed when playing through for the first time. I find the mansion in RE1 to have more of the creep factor than all of RE2 tbh. The mansion is layed out like a maze, and I feel achieves the fear of not knowing whats around the corner immensely. Compared to the PD in 2, which I feel feels more restricted. But to be fair I'm comparing a mansion to a PD, so. Also, the art direction in the game is very stagnant, which I find pretty neat, where like the colors don't change much from area to area. I feel like this works because it makes the mansion inherently creepy, so the art people didn't need to do much to make the whole game remain creepy. One other thing are the static cameras. At first I didn't like them, as going from camera control to the static cameras was hard. But the more I played, the more I realize how creepy the can be. Yeah running into an off-screen zombie can be annoying, but like I said before, it creates an atmosphere that is like nothing I've played before, and I appreciate that.

Now for the bad, and oh boy. First of all, the game is too cryptic. Now idk if it's just me being dumb, or the puzzle are actually difficult to figure out, but I've had to look up a guide multiple times. Too many times I find myself obtaining a new item and thinking "cool... now what?" Also, the inventory. It was hard enough only having eight item slots as Jill, but only having 6 with Chris?? It is just so difficult to manage items at that point. You know there's a problem when getting a new item is more anxiety inducing than a near death experience with a K9. I do feel like that RE2 Remake did spoil me with item slot upgrade tho, so that definetly has a factor in this.

Now I should say that I think RE1 is the better horror game than RE2, but I find RE2 more enjoyable, as it's more fun imo, there aren't as many jumpscares, and the mechanic of an enemy constantly stalking you truly horrifying, but also more engaging, as it gives the RE1 vibe of "what's around the corner?" I saw that GameSpot gave RE Remaster a 7/10, and I feel that's a perfect place for RE. It is a great horror game with a great atmosphere, an awesome cast of characters (my man WESKER), unsettling camera angles, and still is a defining survival horror game (it did coin the phrase after all). However, the problems I have with the game really does bring down my experience a bit, and giving it a 7/10 feels reasonable. It's a great 7/10. That's what I'll say.
