Before I start this review, you may be wondering why I’m doing RE7 instead of doing RE5 or 6. Well that’s because RE7 captivated me more. I was so intrigued about what the game had to offer with its visuals, story, characters, and gameplay, and let me tell you, I’m glad I didn’t wait on this one.
Resident Evil 7 goes back to its roots of being survival horror, while RE4 (and from what I can tell RE5 and 6 as well) were more so action horror. RE7 also returns to the classic RE formula, that being inside this very large environment, but being very limited on where you can go, and progressing with items you find, puzzles you solve, and of course, zombies you shoot. Speaking of, RE7’s zombies aren’t really zombies at all, but are instead called the Molded. These are very scary, as they creep down corridors and hallways, while you don’t know if one is behind the corner or not. This exemplifies RE7’s return to form, as this is the same fear that arises with the static camera Resident Evil games.
Real quick, I need to shout out the story of this game. Without going into spoilers, the story was very captivating, and with some plot twists and secrets being revealed, gave me a sense of sorrow that no other RE game gave me. I really liked how they ended the game, and I hope RE Village continues the narrative side of the RE series.
Overall, the gameplay is super fun with its new first-person camera, the story and characters are very in depth and intriguing (giving value and reason to play RE7’s DLC), and the graphics are very polished and are even better when played in VR – which as scary as it sounds (TRUST ME IT IS TERRIFYING), is actually a blast to play through.
