Marvel’s Spider-Man was a game that blew me away when I first played it. Its gameplay, story, open world; everything about it was such a fun trip, so when Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales came along, I was pumped for more of Insomniac’s work Spider-Man. As expceted, they did not disappoint.
First off, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales brings newbie Miles into the spotlight, being mentored and tutored by Peter Parker to become just as amazing and as independent as him. Miles is then tasked to keep New York City protected while Parker has to leave for a trip. Unfortunately, it isn’t easy for Miles, as a group of misfits called the Underground causes trouble to a new corporation called Roxxon.
Miles Morales has a more straight-forward story than Spider-Man PS4 did, and that is not a bad thing at all. It feels more like a playable Marvel movie than its predecessor, because of it feeling more akin to the movies. Mainly due to its length, if you were to compile all the story cutscenes into one video, it would be about the same runtime as a Marvel movie. I should go and say now that Miles Morales is a far more condensed game than Spider-Man PS4 was. With Spider-Man PS4 taking about 15 hours to finish the main story, Miles Morales takes about 7. This is mainly because Miles Morales more so improves upon what was established in Spider-Man PS4, and not being a full-blown sequel. It is its own standalone experience, and with the improvements and new mechanics to combat, making Miles feel different and arguably more fun than Parker’s moves, new suits, which all are great to wear, and new characters that you’ll get attached to quite quickly. Everything Miles Morales add on to Spider-Man PS4 feels worthy of its own game, and Insomniac was able to deliver.
Speaking of adding on to what was already established, I wanted to give a shoutout to New York City in Miles Morales. It’s the same map that’s in Spider-Man PS4, but now set-in winter, so everything is all cold and snowy now. This is easily one of, if not the best portrayal of New York in any game. Especially on PS5, running the game in 60 FPS with ray tracing, it’s easy to get lost in the world, and just swinging from building to building, doing stunts and tricks, without even realizing that you passed your destination.
In the end, I personally feel like Miles Morales is better than Spider-Man PS4. Not saying Spider-Man PS4 is bad or anything, the game is also great and amazing. With what Miles Morales introduces mechanics wise, the music being very hip and stylish with a mix of hip hop and orchestral, the absolutely gorgeous world, I just can’t help but like Miles Morales more than Spider-Man PS4. If you played Spider-Man PS4, but are concerned that Miles Morales isn’t going to live up to the hype, then you will not be disappointed in the slightest.
