Right from the start, Bugsnax had my attention solely on the idea of a creature, kind of bug and kind of snack. But as more trailers and information trickled out, I became more and more sold on this game. After completing the game, I’m so glad this game lived up to the hype, and even delivered beyond my expectations. You might think it sounds impossible, 'til you've seen a carrot crawl.
For those who don’t know, Bugsnax is a first-person adventure game where you explore Snaktooth Island, after being tasked to interview Lizbert Megafig, and expert on Bugsnax, by your boss She’s giving you one last chance to find her a good story for the paper, or else she’ll fire you. On the island, you find out that she’s missing, and on top of that, a local camp that lives on Snaktooth Island has disbanded, so it’s up to you to not only regroup the locals, but also to find Lizbert, and discover what Bugsnax truly are.
I practically NEED to shout out the story of Bugsnax. On the surface, it just seems like your normal mystery story, where you talk to different Grumpuses (the breed of people in the world of Bugsnax), and catch a multitude of Bugsnax on your journey. But let me tell you, without any spoilers, this game is VERY DIFFERENT, and that is all I’ll say. Part of the Bugsnax experience is seeing the story unfold, so I just wanted to point that out, and leave the story as ambiguous as possible.
Other than the story, Bugsnax’s vibes are very solid. I haven’t touched on any game’s vibes so far, but I feel like Bugsnax needs a shout out. With the whole game revolving around the Bugsnax, it does a great job selling the idea of this world. Each area with Bugsnax in them just feels so lively and real. AND they’re cute. Bunger will always be a treasure to protect and keep safe. Anyway, what helps is that each area has a wide range of Bugsnax with different personalities. You have some that run away from everything and hide in bushes, some that ram into everything it sees, some that fly around with no care in the world, and many more. What’s even better is that some Bugsnax interact with each other too. Many of them fear one Bugsnax, and others hate certain Bugsnax too, so being able to see a natural interaction between Bugsnax is such a neat touch to the world, and the vibes in this game.
One other aspect of Bugsnax that is great are the cast of characters. Bugsnax did a great job with the handful of characters, making sure to give each and every one of them a unique personality and look to them. One thing that really makes Bugsnax’s cast like no other is that fact that because the cast is so diverse, there will most definitely be a character that you will love, and one you will hate. I won’t say who I hate, but I will say that Wambus will forever be GOATED, and Beffica will always be my bestie.
I can go on and on about Bugsnax. The remarkable charm of a game, with colors everywhere, areas and music tracks that’ll vibe with you, outstanding characters, addicting gameplay, adorable creatures; this game has it all. I honestly have no complaints with this game. If you are at all curious about this game, or was fortunate enough to have picked this game up when it was free on PS Plus, then I cannot recommend this game enough.
