Camera & Video Essentials
Let your eyes feast and your mind focus as we learn to create visual art using video and still cameras. This hands-on, interactive class is a mix of photography and video production. If you are a beginner or a social media influencer with millions of views, this course gives you the confidence to shoot awesome still images and cinematic video clips using your cell phone, DSLR, or video camera. (We have cameras that are available for student use.)
This class combines technical theory with practical application, ensuring you learn by doing.
The Goals
Master the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
Learn the art of lighting and depth of field.
Learn your way around dials, custom buttons, focus modes, and standard lens focal lengths.
Apply the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing techniques to build compelling visual narratives.
Understand the critical differences between photo and video settings, including frame rates (24p, 30p, 60p), shutter angles, and video resolutions.
Learn handheld techniques to eliminate shaky footage or blurred images.
Projects
Practice manual exposure tuning by shooting moving subjects and portraits in varying indoor light setups.
Head outdoors to practice framing, capturing action sequences, and adjusting white balance under real-world conditions.
Record and edit a 30-second visual sequence that combines high-quality still photos with continuous video footage.
Evaluation
· You will be required to submit weekly examples of your work for evaluation.
· There will be quizzes on terminology and essential concepts.
· You will be required to submit images and video assigned in class for homework.
· You will create a final project that will be rated on quantity and quality.
You wil create a folder on your Google drive that will be shared with our class folder.
