If you love horror or any sort of darker stories, there's no way around Saya no Uta. Gen Urobuchi's nihilistic writing tendencies are taken to the maximum here and the story manages the rare feat to combine horror with psychological themes and topics that are barely addressed in other stories. The pacing is incredibly fast without sacrificing emotional impact, especially thanks to an unusually analytical and self-aware protagonist; the writing is extremely colorful; and the music, voice acting and art let you sink deeper and deeper into a weird mix of melancholic beauty and terror. Don't worry about reading the version without sex scenes if you have issues with them: You won't miss any important information and might just sacrifice a little bit of additional disgust while reading.

Short, simple, and very interesting. It's not every day that you get stories about Cthulu-esque horrors from another dimension. When you really start thinking about it, it starts getting pretty freaky.

There are some aspects where Saya no Uta shines very brightly, and others where it falls rather flat. It won’t get much praise for its story nor characters, but the overall atmosphere is built extremely well, and despite its faults, I found myself completely absorbed to the VN while reading it. I think the subjective experiences will vary more than average with this one, and I’ve seen people claiming this to be both the best and worst VN they’ve read.
