A great entry into a genre of mystery VNs/games where characters slowly have to die/kill each other. What makes this series stick out are the very lovable characters but also the way these same characters can betray your expectations in a good or bad way. The gameplay during trial scenes are very immersive as you're on a timer and really have to keep in track of how each character acts and what they say.

Unlike it's more serious brother 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, Danganronpa presents itself as a wacky death game and embraces that concept to the fullest. The highlight of this game are it's lovable characters and really cool mysteries to be solved for each game. The mysteries while not being too hard to figure out aren't a walk in the park either and even years after reading you will surely remember some of the murders and your journey to solving them. The best part of this game though are definitely the trials. It's like Kodaka-san wanted to make an Ace Attorney inspired game and forgot not to take LSD, resulting in intense over the top debates between all the cast members in a trial held by a teddy bear after every murder.

Spending time with characters before they're killed - or, worse, do the killing - brings an interesting dynamic to the Ace Attorney courtroom drama formula. Is more than happy to sacrifice realism for a more engaging plot or a more creative murder - TRIPLY so for its sequels.
