Innovation

What is Innovation?

Formally defined as "a new idea, method, or device," innovation comes in many shapes and sizes. From re-vamping a years-old office process to increase office efficiency, to developing a new process to gather data for space research; both types are equally as important.

Why is it important?

In an office setting, innovation is essential to move an office forward, increase efficiency, and reduce overhead costs.

In a research setting, innovation is key to keep up with technological advances, make breakthrough discoveries, and deliver faster, more accurate results.

Innovation Programs

The OPG Mission is to represent NWS field offices in the R2O process by conducting pre-deployment readiness evaluations of promising new science and technology innovations in a realistic in-person and virtual operational environment. In addition, some experimental services and methods for improving communication of NWS expertise to core partners are subjects of OPG assessment. Where appropriate, these tests involve collaborations with relevant stakeholders such as social scientists or emergency management officials.

The R2O Team encourages R2O collaboration among the NWS Field, NOAA research, academic, and private-sector communities. To facilitate engagement among the NWS Field and universities, the R2O Team executes the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education, and Training (COMET) Partners Program. Similarly, the R2O Team supports the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program to aid the transition of promising innovations from the private sector to operations.
