Trauma is an emotional or physical response to one or more physically harmful or life-threatening event with lasting effects on your mental and physical well-being. Stress is a physical and emotional reactions that people experience when they encounter a challenging situation or threat is present.
Intervention: Family Centered Care
Audience: Families who are going through trauma and/or stress.
Diagnosis & Population: Member in a family who is diagnosed with a trauma disorder or Stressor disorder.
Purpose: Promotes partnership between the occupational therapist practitioner and the family.
Instructions: Provide client with self-help tools and help them increase their knowledge on the condition using a client-centered approach. Leave it open to ask questions and listen to what the clients have to say instead of preparing a response right away while they are talking to you.
Rationale & Impact on Function: Social-emotional learning for children and parents to engage in together, support groups, self-care groups etc. will help families function as a unit and understand each other better. Families will feel very involved and included as this type of therapy lets the family be in control for the most part.
