This short screening test is a diagnostic tool that helps decipher between patients who have cognitive impairments and those that do not
It is measuring cognitive impairment
It addresses attention and working memory, cognition, executive functioning, and reasoning/ problem-solving.
Administration
10 minutes to administer
Includes 6 items in a rating scale and checklist format structured by interview and mental tasks
The 6 tasks include asking participants to identify the year, month, time of day, count backwards from 20 to 1, recite months backwards, and recite phrases from memory.

Scoring Procedure
Correct answers receive the score of a “0” and incorrect scores receive a “1.” Each question has a different weighted value as seen in the manual:
0-8= normal-minimal impairment
9-19= moderately impairment
20-28= severe impairment
Psychometrics/Standardization
Compared to Blessed Rating Scale it is very reliable
Correlated to Mental Status Questionnaire it is very valid
Strengths & Weaknesses of Assessment
Strengths:
Useful in the clinical setting for geriatric patients who have gone through recent traumas
Weaknesses:
Does not detect suicidality
Does not directly diagnose
