Schizophrenia is a condition the affects the way an individual thinks, feels and behaves. Must display at least one of the following symptoms for at least a month to be diagnosed: Delusions, Hallucinations, Disorganized speech or behavior and negative symptoms. Schizoaffective disorders are characterized by a combination of mood and psychotic symptoms. Mood disturbance must also be present for a majority of the time.

Blocking dopamine can cause many motoric impacts. This can contribute to parkinsonism, akathisia, dystonic reaction and tardive dyskinesia
Diagnosis and Population: Diagnosis with schizophrenia for late teens and adults. Each individual with schizophrenia may respond differently to each medication.
Purpose: To help relieve psychotic symptoms, improve cognitive functioning, prevent relapse, reduce anxiety and stabilize their mood.
Rationale & Impact on Function: Occupational therapists cannot prescribe medications, but they can collaborate with medical teams and address certain side effects that may impact their daily functioning.
