Diagnosis & Population: Diagnosis of Personality Disorder with impact in thinking, feeling, interpersonal relationships or impulse control (need 2/4 to be diagnosed).
Purpose: To help clients see consequences for their actions and challenge their thinking to find alternative ways of responding. Understand how to properly behave in certain situations.
Rationale & Impact on Function: Help the clients understand that anger is okay to feel, but the negative behaviors that may arise are not. Clients are able to come up with new ways to integrate their fixed responses to behaviors in their proper environment.
Intervention: Interpersonal Behaviors
Specific Intervention: Try Not to Listen Activity
Diagnosis & Population: Diagnosis of Personality Disorder with forming relationships
Instructions: Group activity where each member gets a pair. One individual is the speaker and the other is the "listener". First speaker talks for 2 min straight, and while they are talking, other person is trying to make it clear that they are not listening to their partner at all. The "listener" is not allowed to say anything, they must only rely on their body language to send that message across. Roles then switch and repeat. Once done, both participants must write down their immediate reactions to how they felt when their partner was not listening to them. Then, each should write down behaviors that their partner was showing to prove they weren't listening.
Purpose: To show individuals that body language plays an important role in communication, and that listeners have an influence on how interactions flow.
Rationale & Impact on Function: Will allow individuals to understand their body language and better form meaningful relationships with others. It will help the individual to become a better listener!
