Acute care, outpatient, and home health.
Purpose & Areas Assessed
Used to measure basic cognitive skills to perform ADLs/IADLs, including orientation, visual perceptual/psychomotor abilities, problem-solving skills, and thinking operations.
Administration
About 20-30 minutes depending on the time client takes to complete each sub-test and how familiar the administrator is with testing materials.
User Qualifications
Occupational Therapist.
Materials
Card decks, colored blocks, pegboard set, and a manual that includes definitions of the cognitive domains assessed, instructions for administration, and specific scoring guidelines.
Scoring Procedure
Higher score indicates less cognitive impairment
1= patient does not perform task
2= patient performs part of task
3= patient performs most of task
4= patient performs task well
Psychometrics/Standardization
The LOTCA has varying validity/ reliability for each population it serves:
Intellectual disabilities: 0.26-0.63
Stroke and brain injury: 0.82-0.97
Overall interrater reliability: 0.82-0.97
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths:
Good reliability and validity.
Easy and quick to use.
Activities are relatively interesting and engaging.
Activities are varied enough to maintain client attention.
Straight forward score sheet.
Weaknesses:
Research cited to support testing procedures is over 20 years old.
It does not assess memory.
Scoring is not self-explanatory for some tests.
Some errors are not accounted for in the scoring of some tests.
