Purpose of Assessment & Function(s)/Area(s) Assessed
The Sensory Profile is a norm-referenced assessment used to identify sensory processing patterns and comprehend the impact of different sensory processing patterns on functional performance. List all senses assessed
§ Attention on tasks
§ Self-awareness
§ Adaption to stimuli
§ Sensory discrimination
§ Postural-ocular skills
§ Social-emotional functioning
§ Senses: taste, hearing, sight, touch, proprioception, interception, vestibular, smell
Administration
It takes 10-15 minutes to administer. This assessment is indented for individual therapy. There are no subtests but different forms of the test are available according to age group. Standardization is ensured as the assessment follows a specific format and has a specific way it is administered.
User Qualifications
Those administering this assessment must obtain a master's degree in psychology, education, speech language pathology, occupational therapy, social work, counseling, or in a field closely related. No training is required.
Materials Required
Sensory profile packet, pen or pencil
Scoring Procedure
For each statement, the client rates from 1 (Almost Never) to 5 (Almost Always). Scores are tallied into 4 quadrants, exposing if the client is low registration, sensation seeking, sensory sensitive, and or sensory avoiding
Psychometrics/Standardization
Good test-retest reliability
Internal consistency
Strengths & Weaknesses of Assessment
Strengths:
§ Research Based – good psychometric properties
§ Client-centered
§ Increases understanding of client's sensory processing patterns
§ Designs strategies for managing daily routines
Weaknesses
§ Cross- cultural validity
§ Hypothesis testing
§ Structural validity
§ Self-report

Purpose of Assessment & Function(s)/Area(s) Assessed
the purpose is to identify sensory processing patterns and comprehend the impact of different sensory processing patterns and how that affects functional performance
the areas assessed include:
Hearing
Infant & Child Development
Olfaction
Taste
Touch
Vestibular
Vision & Perception
Administration
15-20 minutes
User Qualifications
No required training/qualifications

writing utensil
Scoring Procedure
caregiver fills out form
125 items
rating scale ranges from 1 "Almost Never" to 5 "Almost Always" or 0 for “does not apply”.
higher scores indicate a higher frequency of specific sensory responses
9 subscales:
Auditory
Visual
Touch
Movement
Body Position
Oral Sensory
Conduct
Social Emotional
Attentional
4 quadrants (sensation seeking, sensory sensitivity, sensation avoiding, and low registration)
Subscale raw scores are individually calculated
followed by quadrant raw scores
Raw scores are converted into percentile ranks.
percentile ranges rank individuals on four sensory processing patterns
Psychometrics/Standardization
reliability= (ICC = 0.80 to 0.90)
validity= (Spearman’s Rho = 0.86, p < 0.01)
Strengths & Weaknesses of Assessment
Strengths
accurate information on children's sensory processing
inclusive- has a version for all ages
Weaknesses
long
potential reporter bias
