Sensory Modulation is the ability to self-regulate certain reactions to sensory inputs in an adaptive manner that fits into their given environment. There are varying senses that we all go through throughout our daily lives. People who have these difficulties may experience hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, difficulty with change, and difficulty engaging in conversations.
Senses we use: Internal sense, movement, taste, touch, proprioception, auditory, smell and sight.
Intervention: Weighted Blanket
Diagnosis & Population: All ages that could have diagnosis of anxiety or sensory processing disorders.
Instructions: Weighted blanket. Make sure that the appropriate weight is given, since for different ages and body types there are different sized weighted blankets. This is for safety purposes.
Purpose: Overall purpose has a very large range including reduced stress, better sleep, calming and for sensory modulation.
Rationale & Impact on Function: The pressure can release dopamine which that will limit stress, leading to better involvement in their daily occupations effectively.

Intervention: Sensory Room
Diagnosis & Population: Sensory Processing Disorder, stress or anxiety, ASD
Instructions: Set up the room so that it is fit for the clients needs such as proper lighting, temperature, sound, scents and other senses. Proprioceptive activities such as a swing or climbing can be included. It is a client-centered approach that will help them engage in their daily occupations.
Purpose: Allows individuals to self-regulate and understand body awareness
Rationale & Impact on Function: Individuals becoming comfortable through sensory integration will allow them to go through daily life without avoiding or seeking too much of one sense that may not be available to them in their everyday environments.
