A dæmon is the unique physical presence of magic from a singular human counterpart. These mystical creatures take the form of animals and have a wide range of magical abilities. Commonly described as soul siblings, dæmons appear at the birth of their human companion. One could think of dæmons as the familiar companions to humans, as they store the innate magic of their human counterpart.
A dæmon may be any sex or gender regardless of the human counterpart
A human child is not able to summon their dæmon instantly; the creature appears as a formless essence, like a whisp
As the child grows and develops their dæmon will form into a creature that reflects their host’s innate self, for example, a more clever human may have a fox dæmon, or a skittish one might have a deer
It is very rare for a dæmon to change it’s base form after a human has matured into adulthood
Extensive trauma or life changing situations have been known to cause an adult’s dæmon to take on a new core form
A dæmon is easily identifiable from other common animals
There is no physical observance for this, a human or dæmon is innately capable of distinguishing a dæmon from other common creatures no matter how far away the creature may visibly be
Dæmons and their humans have a deep, irrefutable bond; while disagreements are sure to be had there is always a true love and care for each other. A human and their dæmon are two halves of the same whole. While dæmons can be considered a separate creature, their loyalty and sense of self is directly tied to their human. Dæmons are able to think their own independent thoughts, but at the end of the day dæmons at their core are the physical personification of their human’s soul and magic. A human and their dæmon are one entity in two bodies.
Due to this, it is incredibly frowned upon to physically interact with the dæmons of others, unless one is a close friend, partner, or family member; it is very intimate to interact with the personification of someone's soul
Dæmons can freely interact with other dæmons without being seen as a social stigma or taboo
Dæmons commonly exhibit their human host's rawest form of thought and emotion
Examples of the unique relationship between human and dæmon found in other media would be Dæmons from His Dark Materials, Patronuses from Harry Potter, Kosmo & Keith from Voltron, or Melog & Catra from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Bonded is the term for a human and dæmon who have fused together into one being. A substantial amount of the human population has performed a specific magic ritual to fully join themselves with their dæmon. This is a personal choice every individual makes in their life, whether to remain in the split state of human and dæmon companion, or to evolve into one creature.
There are no advantages in a magic sense to fusing, just a more intimate connection with one’s dæmon
Since the pair is now whole, there are no longer independent thoughts or expressions from the dæmon, as the two individuals are one concise being
There is no stigma or tension between unbonded humans and bonded ones
While incredibly rare, it has been possible for humans to be born without dæmons. A human that exists without a dæmon is pitied extensively. Souless are seen as other, as fundamentally broken. An intimate part of their existence is missing and they are no longer whole; they are shattered into pieces beyond repair.
These broken creatures tend to exist on the fringes of society, as whispers and urban legends
While Souless have no magical ability, and are irreversibly psychologically damaged, they are still people
Souless are currently not a playable race in MoA
Less rare than a Soulless, a Feral is a human creature that has fully forsaken their humanity and taken part in a forbidden ritual in exchange for raw power and desire. The human disowns every part of themselves beyond base instincts and wants. They have a terrifying appearance, and look as if they have been fully consumed by a monstrous form of their dæmon. These power hungry individuals lose themselves in the transformation and are exiled to the fringes of society where they live as horrifying wild beasts.
A valid example of the physical appearance of a feral would be a werebeast, with the main traits displayed being sourced from the original dæmon
These creatures should be avoided at all cost, they are dangerous and unable to be reasoned with
There is no humanity left in this creature, it is a monster of pure impulse
Ferals are currently not a playable race in MoA
Magic has existed in the world since the dawn of time, and has long been considered to be a gift from the gods. In Caledonia, magic is more commonly referred to as Arcana. Humans have a natural affinity for Arcana due to their dæmons. As long as a human and dæmon are together, they are able to use Arcana.
There are multiple classifications of magic that have been studied and named as time has passed. All magic has been grouped into four different houses with three elements in each house. These groupings keep each other in balance while representing the power of elements which make up the world. The houses are listed below.
Inferno [ Fire & Heat ]
Aquarion [ Water & Ice & Vapor ]
Floron [ Nature & Plants ]
Aetherna [ Air ]
Elektra [ Electricity & Plasma ]
Terron [ Earth & Metal ]
Nocta [ Darkness ]
Eosta [ Light ]
Mystik [ Spiritual & Psychic ]
Corrosen [ Destruction ]
Makra [ Creation ]
Temprol [ Form ]
When a human and dæmon are born, they are blessed with innate magical ability. As the pair grows and the dæmon stablizes it's form, the creature will exhibit dominant traits from this specific Arcane elemental affinity, this is commonly referred to as an individual’s Major Arcana. While a human and dæmon's Major Arcana is determined from birth, they are able to specialize and refine their magic abilities by studying other types of magic. These abilities are referred to as Minor Arcana.
For example, a dæmon with an Inferno Major would exhibit characteristics associated with flames and fire, and their human would be more specialized with this specific type of magic
Some humans and dæmons may not have Minor Arcana at all, others may have one Minor Arcana, to two or three
Depending on what is studied, a dæmon's form may experience small changes due to the new influences of magic; for example, a dæmon with an Aetherna Minor may summon wings and be able to fly
The base form of the dæmon is never altered due to this process, meaning a wolf dæmon cannot change into a species of bird solely because of the newly added Aetherna Minor, but it may grow feathers or wings
A Patron is the common term for an individual's personal god of choice. While not everyone in Caledonia is an practitioner of the country's religion, it is the only organized faith in the empire and the majority of citizens do partake in it. Every active member of the faith chooses one, occasionally two, gods to have an intimate connection with.
This deeply personal relationship allows the individual to receive dreams or visions from their god, but this has rarely occurred over the past several centuries
Depending on what deity is selected, your character may receive buffs to their stats/abilities over the course of the group's plot
Things such as cancer or other equally hard to treat or fatal conditions have been mastered and fully contained for the most part! It would be very rare nowadays for someone to have to pass due to these illnesses.
However, there is something that has recently reared it's head during the past 200 years that has taken the place of illness such as cancer and the like. It is known as Arcane Deterioration Syndrome, more commonly know as The Rot. It is a disease that appears to attack the very magic of a person, causing them to waste away til they unfortunately perish. There is no known cure, only treatment plans and they don't seem to be working very well. The Rot was first discovered around the same time the Decline in the world timeline started.
The Rot does not seem to be contagious, it appears to be random when/if an infection starts. It is a purely Arcane based illness that doctors and leading experts are stumped by. It has no bacteria, or virus, or cells to speak of.
As of right now there is no hard limit for character slots! It's on the user's judgment to make and create as many characters as they think they can manage. However, character applications for MoA are not always going to be open, so you may have periods where you will have to wait before you are able to submit a new character.
Animal endangerment level plays no part in how "rare" a dæmon is. The only thing that determines rarity is if it is a crossbreed/hybrid or a mythological creature, as in lore they are thought to posses more raw Arcana and magic. A common animal, even if endangered, is still viewed as a common animal.
The strength of a dæmon's physical forms is largely dependent on the strength of their human host! Mainly from their vitality and arcana stats. Think of a dæmon as a physical projection of the soul, so as long as the person is relatively healthy, the dæmon should be just as strong and lively. If the human is under stress in any way, this reflects on the dæmon as well.
So size and strength of the traditional animal doesn't really play much of a part in how strong a dæmon can be.
If, however, a person has physically or mentally weakened to a considerably drastic state, it would reflect in their dæmon. In this case the dæmon would look distressed, if their species is capable of showing physical signs of stress. If the condition got worse, the dæmon would retreat to it's wisp state to recover and stay in a low energy environment.
Dæmons do have real physical bodies when in their animal form, so they can wear trinkets and accessories!
The Caledonian Empire itself is heavily into high fashion and over the top aesthetics. So matching with your dæmon visually, be it hair color, eye color, clothes etc. is a deeply ingrained part of the culture at this point in time. Clothing inspired by dæmons and accessories for a dæmon is something that would be widely available for purchase on the market.
Dæmons do not need to physically consume energy in any way in order to maintain themselves. They receive all the energy they need due to the symbiotic relationship they have with their human host! However, food for dæmons does exist in small treats and other products that one could find in the real world pet market. Food is not a necessity, but can be consumed if desired.
You can ride the dæmon if the dæmon allows it, but it will not be recognized as an official group mount.
