Commonly taking on the form of everyday animals, dæmons have several unique features. For one their innate arcane abilities can affect and alter their physical form. A dæmon with an Inferno Arcana might have claws that sizzle as if they were hot coals, or an Aetherna dæmon might have feathers and wings. It is also fairly common to find a dæmon with a crossbred physical form, such as a lion combined with a deer. Lastly, in rare instances, dæmons have been reported to take the form of a mythological creature.
Everyone knows that a dæmon settles on it's core form once it's human host has reached a level of maturity commonly found in adolescence/adulthood. A lesser known fact is that dæmons are able to change that core form due to their host experiencing extensive trauma or life changing situations. This has only happened in several reported events, and it is a very rare act for a dæmon to undergo. Something catastrophic or all-enveloping must have happened for an individual's core values and principles to experience such a drastic change.
An individual's race is determined by the physical state that they and their dæmon are in. Regular humans with their dæmon companions are simply referred to as "Human". They have the highest populations among all the other races in Caledonia, and there is no stigma or tension between humans and their sub-races.
The second largest population is the sub-race known as "Bonded." Bonded is the term for a human and dæmon who have fused together into one being. This happens when the human has performed a specific magic ritual to fully join themselves with their dæmon. It is a personal choice every individual makes in their life, whether to remain in the split state of human and dæmon companion, or to evolve into one creature. There are no advantages in a magic sense to fusing, just a more intimate connection with one’s dæmon. Since the pair is now whole, there are no longer independent thoughts or expressions from the dæmon, as the two individuals are one concise being
While incredibly rare, it has been possible for humans to exist without dæmons, this third sub-race is simply known as "Souless." A human that was born without a dæmon is pitied extensively. Souless are seen as other, as fundamentally broken. An intimate part of their existence is missing and they are no longer whole; they are shattered into pieces beyond repair. These broken creatures tend to exist on the fringes of society, as whispers and urban legends. While Souless do not posses any magical ability, they are still people, and should be treated as such.
An exception to the Souless sub race would be humans who have lost their dæmon due to dæmon perishing, or the human experiencing a trauma that completely broke them mentally. While these humans technically could be classified as Souless, they are still considered human as they once had a dæmon, and were not born without one.
The fourth sub-race to be found in Caledonia is known as a "Feral." Less rare than a Soulless, a Feral is a human creature that has fully forsaken their humanity and taken part in a forbidden ritual in exchange for raw power and desire. The human disowns every part of themselves beyond base instincts and wants. They have a terrifying appearance, and look as if they have been fully consumed by a monstrous form of their dæmon. These power hungry individuals lose themselves in the transformation and are exiled to the fringes of society where they live as horrifying wild beasts. A valid example of the physical appearance of a feral would be a werebeast, with the main traits displayed being sourced from the original dæmon. These creatures should be avoided at all cost, as they are dangerous and unable to be reasoned with. There is no humanity left in this creature, it is a monster of pure impulse
Dæmons are easily distinguishable from other common animals, but no one really knows the reason as to why. Perhaps there is an innate connection that is sensible to other beings, which causes the distinction to be felt. In any case, a common animal and dæmon are never confused for the other, in any circumstance.
Despite the fact that a dæmon's core identity is directly tied to their host, dæmons are able to think their own independent thoughts and communicate with others on an extensive level. They have been known to frequently converse with their hosts and with other dæmons. They do this by both talking in the common human tongue, and with more animalistic body language or noises. It can be hard for other people to properly understand a dæmon's speech when it is not their own, the stronger a bond is between individuals, the better they are able to understand each other's dæmons.
When dæmons are absorbed by the host during the Bonding Ceremony, there is no physical trace remaining of the individual dæmon, as the two individuals are now completely integrated and share one consciousness and form. There are no independent thoughts or expressions from the dæmon at all, as it no longer exists as it's own creature, due to fusing completely with the human. This meaning that if the dæmon had personal quirks or habits that the human did not, it is possible for these to be absorbed and adopted by the fused form of human and dæmon, due to them being one being as of now.
