The Caledonian Empire is a society that has existed for well over a thousand years at this point in time. This page of the website is designed to compress that extensive history into something that is easily manageable for group members and moderators alike.
This will be achieved by using a bullet listed timeline to go over the main features of the world. It is recommended you read the Lore & Theology section of the website before reading this section.
You are free to draw from this timeline while building your characters, or to add in any small events that can affect your character's personal history so long as they don't conflict with the setting and world of Caledonia.
After the Great Freeze, which was punishment from the gods due to the Doctrine War, the world was slowly recovering from the trauma it had experienced.
It took nearly 100 years of humanity on the brink of collapse before one group arose from the others to fight for a better future. This grouping would be the future forefathers of the Caledonian Empire.
In universe, time before the establishment of the Caledonian Empire is referred to as B.C. or Before Caledonia.
Time after the establishment of Caledonia is referred to as P.C. or Present Caledonia.
At this point, Caledonia was a small clan with very little territory in the area which would eventually be known as Caledonia Proper.
It took many years for the Caledonian Empire to be built up into a respectable power and organization.
They were a very small group at first till their intelligent maneuvering and diplomatic skills convinced the other small surrounding factions to join them, as they had extensive resources in the post apocalyptical world.
It took around 350 years of Caledonia building itself up in it's future capital before it was able to turn it's gaze to it's surroundings, rather than focus on stabilizing and growing itself.
Expansion was on the mind for the original founders of Caledonia.
They wanted to unify the world under one brand of leadership in order to prevent disasters, such as the Doctrine War and Great Freeze, from ever happening again.
To do this, the Caledonian Empire peacefully enter neighboring territories and intermingled till they were able to secure marriage contracts with the local leaders, binding them together by 400 P.C.
Caledonia did this with the districts that would eventually become Breckenridge and The Ebudæ River Delta, which is why the Lionhart and MacLaurin Families are so loyal to the Royal Throne.
The other neighboring foreign powers would not be so easy to persuade to join the ranks of the Caledonian Empire.
In 400 P.C. the Conquest(s) of Terr-Oryn began.
At first there was some hesitance due to the fact that war is what caused the first collapse of the world.
This was quickly swept aside when Caledonian leaders assured the people they had the blessing of the gods on their side.
Avalon would be the first of the other ruling districts to fall to the war power of Caledonia.
Caledonia needed to have Avalon on it's side in order to secure their magical knowledge, as it was far more advanced than the rest of the continent's.
Avalon eventually fell after a long siege of it's capital, possible only thanks to the naval forces of Ebudæ which allowed the combined forced of Breckenridge and Caledonia Proper to sack the city.
While Avalon was rich in knowledge, they had no where near the muscle and numbers that Caledonian forces did.
The leaders of Avalon surrendered and pledged fealty to the empire, birthing the Galanodel Family in 402 P.C.
The Empire then recovered and recuperated, focusing on blending the magical knowledge they had acquired from Avalon and combining it with their technology.
The next conquest would be to the northern Kestramore, which would be the longest standoff in the entire expansion plan.
The forces of Kestramore were tough and it was nearly impossible to navigate the harsh climate if you did not have their expertise and experience on your side.
This would last in a standoff of 12 years before a great Caledonian general by the name of Cazimere was able to use his dæmon dragon to melt through the frozen forces of the north and force the leaders to kneel.
House Snærós surrendered to Caledonia and became the ruling power of the Kestramore district in 412 P.C.
With the combined forces of Kestramore, Ebudæ, Brekenridge, and Avalon, the Caledonia Empire spent time recovering from the 12 year long campaign.
The Empire only grew more cultured and advanced during its down time of 128 years before it again turned it's eyes outward.
The Second Conquest started in 531 P.C.
Caledonia quickly tamed Okacho, who surrendered without a fight the same year.
The Huayllas Family had been looking to join the empire for some time now due to their own diminishing resources.
The next to join the empire was the Isle of Stars in 532 P.C. who were faced on the battlefield and utterly decimated due to the advanced technology of the Empire.
The Yamagata Family were put in charge due to the fact they had suggested they take the peace treaty surrender before warfare broke out, understanding they didn't stand a chance against the forces of Caledonia.
After this, there were only the Khartoum Desert and Guardian Tropics left to assimilate into the Empire.
The Isles of Ebony at this point in time were combined with the Guardian Tropics.
The forces of Khartoum and the Guardian Tropics combined in order to try and hold off an invasion from Caledonia, this plan managed to work for a time.
Caledonia did not meet the challenge that was being presented, as there was an internal power struggle back home which almost brought the empire to collapse.
The assimilated foreign powers had become unruly and were vying for power and control.
This lead to the establishment of a parliament known as Caladium Court, the leading branch of government outside of the Royal Throne.
Caledonia wasn't stabilized till 783 P.C.
On the eve of 790 P.C. Caledonia launched a surprise attack against the combined powers of the Guardian Tropics and Khartoum, who were also suffering from internal power struggles at this point in time.
This was the bloodiest portion of the conquest, and is referred to as the Siege of Thorns, by most of the population.
By 800 P.C. Caledonia has the Guardian Tropics and Khartoum under it's ruling, establishing both the Joshi Family, and Karim Family respectively.
It took 100 years for the Empire to find stability due to the controversial methods taken during Siege of Thorns.
A small subdivision of people not loyal to the empire decided that enough was enough and began a rebellion.
They felt as though the crimes of the conquest were too step compared to what Caledonia could have done.
They felt the conquest was not blessed by the gods in a measure for peace and unification.
This rebellion took place on the area that would eventually be known as the Isles of Ebony.
The area itself was perfect for the rebels as it is one of the last unexplored frontiers of Caledonia, and the forests were protected by a magical barrier of some kind.
The rebellion itself didn't last very long, only for about one year before it was subdued by Caledonian Forces.
In response, Caledonia decided that the Isles of Ebony needed their own unique leadership separate from the Guardian Tropics.
The Pualani Family became the final Noble House added to the Empire.
The dissent the rebellion had caused left quite a gaping wound for the leaders of Caledonia to fix, and as such the next 500 years were spent paying reparations to those the public felt Caledonia had wronged.
Mainly to the victims, and the victims' descendants of the Siege of Thorns massacre, what the rebellion had been inspired by.
Caledonia managed to salvage it's reputation and win back the trust of the people during that 500 years.
After that dark period in history the Empire at last had become stable and cohesive, with a population that trusted it's ruling authority and a booming economy.
They had a Golden Age of 400 years.
Culture and technology boomed during this point in time, all the districts were celebrating their prosperity
Eventually this fortune would come to a close.
By the year 1800 P.C. the Golden Age had drawn to a close.
The reasons behind this happening are still quite the mystery for historians, there doesn't seem to be a clear cut cause.
Resources stopped being as bountiful, magic started to weaken, it was almost as if the world began rotting from the inside out.
It started slowly at first, before cumulating into a snowball that drastically affected the entirety of the empire.
To counter act this period of bad fortune, the government was quick to act, imposing restrictions and mandates in order to conserve what resources remained and tried to educate the public on how to best deal with these changes.
Despite this, with every passing year the situation seemed to get worse and worse.
It has been over 200 years since the Golden Age of old, and the general public is still reeling from the Decline of Caledonia.
Individuals barely are able to use the extent of their magic powers, only having up to two unique abilities at most.
Energy curfews and blackouts have become common place, with resources being more scarce than ever.
Dæmons seem to be affected by the Decline the most, having lost much of the scope of their abilities and usually forced to return to their wisp like state in order to conserve their magical energy.
There is hope however, with the discovery of Goldenrod Valley, the people and the government are sure this is the answer from the gods to their many prayers.
All we need is some brave volunteers to venture into the unknown and help us colonize the area.
