Myths of Arcana takes inspiration from table top rpgs like Dungeons & Dragons when it comes to a character's stats. These abilities will play an intimate part in group dynamics, and allow for more compelling character situations. It also means your character will have active flaws which you, as the player, will need to plan around. A character with stats that are weaker physically should avoid offered group quests that rely on needing high physical strength, while an character with high intelligence stats would excel in an intellect based quest.
Stats give your character buffs to certain ability checks, or disadvantages in others. This grants a feeling of genuine satisfaction when your character excels, or presents an opportunity for hilarity and growth if your character falls on their face. There is always the factor of chance involved when it comes to rolling the dice.
When you first create your character, you start out with a base line of 30 stat points to distribute as you see fit. You can max out 3 abilities with this, or evenly distribute the stat points between the 7 abilities to choose from. Perhaps you prefer a mix of both strategies, it's completely up to you! You are able to earn an additional 15 stat points in the group, allowing you a grand total of 45 stat points out of the 70 slots available.
Stat points are numerically broken down into four sub-sections, for every completed sub-section you earn a permanent +1 modifier to that particular ability rolls. This meaning the highest total base modifier you could have for an ability is +4, if you have 10 stat points in one ability section.
To break this down further, if a character has one stat point in any ability, they automatically receive a +1 modifier, if they have four stat points they will receive a +2, seven stat points will achieve a +3, and ten stat points grant you the highest possible modifier, +4.
When making ability rolls, the moderators will be doing so in a visible public chatroom in the discord using a standard D20. A bot will be used to aid in this process. Your stat modifier will be added to the base roll in it's numerical form.
For example:
Character A has 5 stat points in Arcana, meaning they receive a +2 modifier to their Arcana Ability Rolls. When rolling, a moderator will do a D20 roll +2, this means the highest roll Character A can receive is a 22, and the lowest can be 2.
When making Arcana based rolls that involve element based advantages and disadvantages, the moderators will roll your ability checks twice. Depending on if you have rolled with advantage or disadvantage, your result will be the higher or lower roll.
For example:
Character B has Inferno for their Major Arcana, and they are attempting to roll for on a Aquarion based interaction. Inferno is at a disadvantage to Aquarion, so the moderator will roll for Character B twice and choose the lowest roll.
We will list each ability below along with a general description in order for you to understand the dynamics at play for each ability, and how it reflects on your character.
STRENGTH -
Strength measures your character’s muscle and raw physical power. If your character is hauling around a hulking sword or weapon of some kind, or is just extremely muscular, this ability will determine how effective an attack or show of physical strength is. You can apply strength to any type of obstacle, living or otherwise, or general situation. Meaning yes, you can try to punch the boulder.
DEXTERITY -
Dexterity measures your character's reflexes, nimbleness and coordination. If your character is quick on their feet or a quick thinker, this ability can allow your character to dodge attacks, evade tricky situations, counterattack, escape, or make a quick decision of any kind. This ability is fittingly flexible, and can be applied to physical and social situations.
INTELLECT -
Intellect measures your character's logical thinking ability, and scholarly knowledge. If your character is more talented among the books and research department, this ability can be used for your character to identify artifacts, solve equations or puzzles, or pick up on subtle clues in your environment. This is predominately an environmental and social ability, but it can be used in physical situations as well.
WISDOM -
Wisdom measures your character's worldly and practical knowledge. Perhaps your character has acquired a sense of street smarts, or has been exposed to the ways of the world. This ability could allow for your character to excel at making hard judgment calls, or have a primal sense of understanding their environment, or have the intuition to see through a charlatan. It is also an ability used mainly in environmental and social situations, but it can be applied to physical situations.
CHARISMA -
Charisma measures your character's social skill and negotiation prowess. If your character is able to talk their way out of any situation, or is known as a charmer or flatterer, investing stat points here will only increase their proficiency. A character with high charisma may be able to influence the world and NPCs around them in tricky social situations. Perhaps through diplomacy, or maybe through intimidation. Charisma, while usually only relevant to social matters, can be applied to physical situations.
ARCANA -
Arcana measures your character's proficiency and skill with their magic. A character's ability for magic can be expressed in multiple different ways, and be tailored to fit their exact needs. Perhaps your character has more control and finesse over their abilities, or they possess more raw power. You can fine tune the particulars to whatever best describes your character, but in general this ability will determine how precise, accurate, or concentrated a character's magic act is. Arcana is usually only relevant to environmental or physical situations, but can potentially be applied to social ones as well.
VITALITY -
Vitality measures your character's physical health, endurance, and resilience. Characters with high vitality may fight for longer periods of time or last longer in unfavorable conditions. This ability will function as a reflection of your character's health, natural defense to both magical AND physical attacks, mental and physical endurance, and their usefulness in high-stress situations. As such, this ability can be applied to any and all types of situations, be it environmental, social, or physical.
