Our Week at a Glance
Math: All students should be practicing their multiplication facts for a minimum of ten minutes every night. It is very important that they are fluent in multiplication facts as they continue their educational career. Flashcards are not needed, but if you would like to print a set visit this site. If you are interested in having your student practice on IXL, please view the following video. IXL Video Link
We will be starting Module 5 this week. Module 5 focuses on fractions. We will be doing lessons 1-4. n topic A, as an introduction to fractions, students apply their understanding of equal shares from earlier grades to partitioning a whole into equal parts. Beginning with the familiar units of halves, thirds, and fourths, students partition concreteobjects into equal parts. They associate the number of equal parts that a whole is partitioned into with the fractional unit, and they name fractions in unit form. Throughout the topic, students have multiple opportunities to see that as the number of equal parts that a whole is partitioned into increases, the size of each part decreases, regardless of the shape of the whole.
Reader's Workshop: This week, we will be reviewing reading skills that we have learned so far in 3rd grade. We will especially focus on grade level standards such as finding the main idea, answering comprehension questions using evidence from the text, sequencing, and comparing/contrasting. We will also begin assessing students' current reading levels starting this week.
Writer's Workshop: Students will continue to practice Informational Writing. Students will be using their notes about Harriet Tubman from last week to write an informational paragraph this week.
If you do not practice paragraphing/writing at home with your student, now is a great time to start! A good place to begin is to grab a journal and provide them with topics. These topics can range from what they did over the weekend to their favorite place to visit.
If you want to join in on the fun of writing, create a secret diary with your child! This would look like one person writing a short paragraph, passing the diary off, reading, and then responding.
Studies Weekly: This week students will be working on week 9 in our social studies curriculum. Week 9 focuses on natural features and landforms in California.
P.E.: Please dress appropriately on Monday for P.E.
Weekly Reminders:
Daily 20 Reading Log: Please make sure your child is reading a "Just Right" chapter book. Picture books or books that are too easy will not be accepted for daily 20 reading. Your child should begin a book and continue reading it throughout the week. Please make sure they are writing the book title correctly and neatly in their folders.
Weekly Folder: A parent/guardian signature is required weekly. Students will return the folder the next school day.
Communicator: Each day, please read the communicator with your child, check off completed assignments, then sign the communicator.
Thank you,
Mrs. Gibbins
