Benchmark Reading Tests: Prior to Winter Break, the Benchmark tests and questions were read aloud to all students to help them get used to the format and types of questions on these tests. Now that we are about halfway through 3rd grade, students will be reading the tests and questions independently. Please encourage your student through this learning curve as they become more independent in their reading skills.
Our Week at a Glance
Math: This week we will be continuing module 3. Please make sure your child is practicing multiplication facts for at least 10 minutes a night. Students are working towards mastering their multiplication tables by the end of January. We will be focusing on lessons 16, 17, and 19. The next math test will be on Friday. A study guide will come home on Thursday to help students prepare.
Students will have a fluency test every Friday. They should be practicing their facts for at least 10 minutes each night.
Reader's Workshop: This week, we will continue getting back into our Reader's Workshop practices. As a refresher, these stations include small groups with the teacher, reading to self, responding to reading, writing, word work, and technology. We will continue unit 5 in Benchmark, where we will be answering the essential question: what is the value of innovation? Students will be taking a benchmark test on Friday.
Writer's Workshop: Students will begin Informational writing this week. Students will learn how to gather information about their topic and use proper resources. This week, students will be researching and writing about Thomas Edison.
Social Studies: We will be working on week 25 which is all about how produce from farms gets to be sold at the market through processing and transportation.
Science: Students will be focusing on making sense of variation of different species. We will be looking at how wolves may vary depending on their specific traits.
P.E.: Please dress appropriately on Monday and Friday for P.E./Dance.
Weekly Reminders:
Daily 20 Reading Log: Please make sure your child is reading a "Just Right" chapter book. Picture books or books that are too easy will not be accepted for daily 20 reading. Your child should begin a book and continue reading it throughout the week. Please make sure they are writing the book title correctly and neatly in their folders.
Weekly Folder: A parent/guardian signature is required weekly. Students will return the folder the next school day.
Communicator: Each day, please read the communicator with your child, check off completed assignments, then sign the communicator.
