Hello Parents and Students,
Homework and Reminders:
Return signed Weekly Green Folder on Tuesday
Daily 20 reading log due on Thursday
Check homework and sign communicator daily
House shirts every Thursday
Hawk Spirit Day every Friday (optional)
Benchmark Reading Tests: Prior to Winter Break, the Benchmark tests and questions were read aloud to all students to help them get used to the format and types of questions on these tests. Now that we are about halfway through 3rd grade, students will be reading the tests and questions independently. Please encourage your student through this learning curve as they become more independent in their reading skills.
Our Week at a Glance
Math: We will be finishing our Module 3 books this week. Please keep these at home.
In Module 4 this week, students will formalize the use of multiplication to determine the area of a rectangle. They will complete grids to show the rows and columns of squares within a rectangular array and connect the number of rows and columns to the side lengths. Students transition to using area models and relate the side lengths to area by writing multiplication equations.
Students will have a fluency test every Friday. They should be practicing their facts for at least 10 minutes each night. Click here for printable flash cards.
Reader's Workshop: Students will continue working in our Benchmark books titled Advancements in Technology. We will continue our Reader's Workshop practices. These stations include small groups with the teacher, reading to self, responding to reading, writing, word work, and technology. This will be our last week of unit 5, where we will be answering the essential question: What is the value of innovation? Students will be taking a benchmark test on Friday.
Writer's Workshop: Students will use what they learned last week about informational writing and independently write an informational paragraph on Martin Luther King Jr.
Social Studies: Students will be working on week 26 in Studies Weekly. Week 26 focuses on transportation over time. Students will learn about transportation on land, water, and air. We will learn about how technology has improved transportation over time.
P.E.: Please dress appropriately on Wednesday for P.E this week.
Science: Students will be focusing on making sense of the variations of different species. We will be looking at how wolves may vary depending on their specific traits.
Weekly Reminders:
Daily 20 Reading Log: Please make sure your child is reading a "Just Right" chapter book. Picture books or books that are too easy will not be accepted for Daily 20 reading. Your child should begin a book and continue reading it throughout the week. Please make sure they are writing the book title correctly and neatly in their folders.
Weekly Folder: A parent/guardian signature is required weekly. Students will return the folder the next school day.
Communicator: Each day, please read the communicator with your child, check off completed assignments, then sign the communicator.
Thank you,
Mrs. Gibbins
