Hello Parents and Students,

Daily 20 reading log due on Friday
Check homework and sign communicator daily
Wear House color on Thursdays
Hawk Spirit Day every Friday (optional)
GATE Testing: This week, 3rd graders will be taking the GATE test. The GATE test is a 3-part test that will be on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. These tests will be done on the computer in a similar format to the IABs we did last week. Students will be assessed in verbal reasoning (language and vocabulary), quantitative reasoning (math and patterns), and nonverbal skills (shapes and logic).
100th Day of School: We will be celebrating 100 days of school on February 4th! Students are welcome to dress up as a 100 year old for this day, but it is not required.
Valentine's Day: Your child may bring a Valentine to share with the class on Friday, February 13th. We do ask that you have your child write only their name, not the recipient's name on the item. This will help the passing out process. We have 30 students in our class.
Our Week at a Glance
Math: This week, students will be continuing Module 4. Students will apply area concepts and strategies to a variety of mathematical and real-world problems. They will compose and decompose rectilinear shapes to find area, utilizing the attributes of rectangles to find unknown side lengths when necessary. They will also consider reasonableness related to area in real-world situations and use line plots to analyze measurement data based on area.
Students will have a fluency test every Friday. They should be practicing their facts for at least 10 minutes each night. Click here for printable flash cards.
Reader's Workshop: Students will be engaging in centers this week that will involve independent practice, technology, small groups with teacher, and independent reading.
Writer's Workshop: We will begin our President research project this week. We will begin researching this week in class. The expectation is that all students will be completing the research in the classroom. Some students have asked if they can still do some research at home, that is also fine.
Social Studies: Students will be learning different themes of geography in week 6 of Studies Weekly this week.
P.E.: Please dress appropriately on Monday for P.E.
Weekly Reminders:
Daily 20 Reading Log: Please make sure your child is reading a "Just Right" chapter book. Picture books or books that are too easy will not be accepted for daily 20 reading. Your child should begin a book and continue reading it throughout the week. Please make sure they are writing the book title correctly and neatly in their folders.
Weekly Folder: A parent/guardian signature is required weekly. Students will return the folder the next school day.
Communicator: Each day, please read the communicator with your child, check off completed assignments, then sign the communicator.
Thank you,
Mrs. Gibbins
