The Citizens of the Towers
The first places of sanctuary after the fall of the world. The towers were erected when vehicles could still find gas and buildings could still be built with scraps and ingenuity or stood before the fall of humanity. The Towers excelled at growing food in their large vertical buildings, generating electricity and finding ways to make clean water accessible. Offering many levels of 'life' and opportunity. It did not take long for those that were in charge of the Towers to get addicted to power and greed. How nice your life was in the Towers was dictated by what floor you were on. The lowest floors were filled with workers, whom some might call slaves or servants, they were given only what they needed to survive and kept in poor conditions. While they had the highest numbers, they had the worst lives. They had no right to laws, safety or ability to leave. It was a harsh life of oppression, with no education and little chance of getting out of it, though they had food, water and shelter, many did not live a long life. The middle of the towers were occupied by the great markets that sold all sorts of items imaginable. They also housed the workspaces for engineers, medical staff, builders, technology, research, etc. Among those would have been the skilled workers that worked in those areas and lived a good life, though they were held under lock and key the same as those that lived lower than them and had little say in the status of their lives. The doctors, engineers, researchers, and scientists were closer to the top, kept in more luxury than those below them, they lived what many would have thought an upper-middle class life, though they too had little say in what they were allowed to do and where they could go. At the top of the towers were the leadership, kept in the highest luxury, attended by servants and those that saw to their every pleasure, they breathed the cleanest air, ate the best food and lived a life of privilege built upon oppression of others. All of the leadership had ties to the engineering, medical, military, technology, science, etc that built the towers and some are believed to be of the greatest minds left in the world. And the most corrupt.
Roles
Weapon's Guild
Weapon's Guild Lead: Franklin Masters (thommy.connolly)
The greatest addition to Mercy is filled by the ranks of the Tower citizens. It takes much time and effort to manufacture a gun or ammunition. Mercy depended only on what could be found before the arrival of the Tower citizens. Creating their niche of power, this guild has integrated very well into Mercy and holds a great deal of prestige. Looking for a lead of the Weapon's Guild and members. The Tower citizens at this time only are allowed in the Weapon's Guild. Anyone may attempt to join through roleplay.
Technology & Medical Co-op
Medical Lead - Evelyna Bose (evelynachick)
Co-Lead: Bryce Van Horne (triton.dionysus) (Will represent the group in council)
By far one of the most advanced groups. This is where new tech and resurrected old technology is born. Having lost their great labs and workspaces in the Towers, they will have to work under less than ideal conditions to prove their worth to Mercy with the materials they can find. They also must work with the hands-on healers of Mercy that might have less knowledge, but know the people and environment! We are looking for members to join its ranks.
Former Tower Leaders - Ryker Kohler (trickyrickydicky) & Maxh Sheriffe
Two roles are open for the former leaders of the Towers. Having struck a deal to offer assistance to Mercy in the pursuit of more technology in their society, they have been promised safety and the best accommodation Mercy can provide. If applying for a role, please explain your character's background experience and detailed background about their role as leadership of the Tower and get familiar with the TED talks about how the Tower started. These are not the middle or upper middle tower people, this role is for the highest level Tower leader that was involved in the oppression of many of those in the Tower, yet are the greatest minds and thinkers that exist. These roles might be disliked by a great many, though you found power once, you might find it again. Former tower leaders can also be a faction leader or member if they wish. Please speak to staff for more information and guidance.
Former Upper Tower Citizens - Unlimited
These are the engineers, technicians, medical staff, architects, scientists and researchers of the Towers. Living in luxury and excess, though still under the thumb of the rulers of the Towers, many may have trouble accepting these people in Mercy, however, the abilities you possess will make you a new great commodity. Many will be urged to join in with the Land, Water or Horse barons or help with the other factions of Mercy. See the Freelander page for information about those groups you can apply to.
Skilled Workers and Artisans - Unlimited
These are the brewers, the smiths, the artists, jewelry makers, entertainers, carpenters, tailors, chefs, animal handlers, etc of the Towers. No longer oppressed by the Towers and finally seeing how others were treated above and below them, the world is opened up to these people with an education that does not compare to anything Mercy could have. They are encouraged to join the Collective, Union, apply for groups that suit their skills or strike out on their own in a shop or otherwise. Bring your amazing ideas and tell the story!
Former Workers/Slaves - Unlimited
Raised in poor conditions that rarely saw outside of their poverty-stricken lives, they were kept in less than ideal conditions. The former Tower workers could have come to Mercy in three ways: Liberated by the Freelanders before the fall of the Towers, escaped at the takeover of the Tower or enslaved by the Rogues in the Tower and recently escaped or liberated. Now with access to the same education, clean water, food, homes and freedom, the world is yours to seize. Some in town may resent the workers as mouths to feed without immediate return and some jump at the chance to help you integrate and find your way. And with the upper-level Tower people, some might still see you as servants and filth. Join in a faction, strike out on your own, for the first time, the choice is yours!
You were in the Tower when the Rogues took over likely the only home you knew. Those in the lower levels of the tower might have come to it when taken from the Deadscape or born into the lower class level of the hard-working person that was usually underfed and under cared for. The upper-level tower people, often just as trapped as the lower, were at least afforded education and an easier lifestyle. Many did not realize the full extent of the treatment of the lower-level workers or turned a blind eye to it, few tried to help.
Most in the Tower never have eaten meat, or seen an animal outside of a book, the upper-level people may never have seen a plant growing in the soil unless they were part of the development of the large vertical farming region. Though had access to private showers, running water and electricity. The upper-level tower people may not be based in the world of survival, but they’ve been educated and trained into highly skilled innovators that could make life in Mercy better and the citizens live longer, healthier lives.
When you first arrive at Mercy, all workers were accepted immediately and the upper-level people were turned away at first. Some might have even died while waiting for the Council to agree to give them a chance. However, all new people go through the same process: You are given a room in the motel close to the gates. You might be crammed in there with several people if many came in at once. You would be interviewed by the Sheriff and Liaison to ensure you were not a risk and you offer something to Mercy to make your stay there worth the rations spent on you. When housing was ready, you would be offered your new place and leave the motel. All meals are had in the Community Hall, no cooking is allowed in your home (fires are only for heat in the few cold weeks of the year). You will have two weeks to find your job to try and carve out your new life in Mercy and the Liaison will help you find what that passion is. After that, it’s up to you the future you make here.
((OOCly, you can RP out that beginning OR you can use it as a backdrop to your arrival and strife getting into Mercy. Or pick and choose which you’d like to do. These are built-in RP opportunities… as is going to a lead of any business and requesting to talk to them about a job. Head to the Liaison and he can work between you and another to get you a meeting. If you do not want to actually ‘work’ anywhere or own your own business, then please do feel free to RP that you have some job you do. Keep in mind not working in Mercy is not an option, so NPC that part of your story if you like))
Each citizen will get 50 rations a week from the bank to spend on the needs for daily life, pleasures and vices. Working at certain places could find more rations to spend or the freedom to enjoy whatever commodity offered by the business. Rations are tracked NPCly so there would be no way to trick the system into getting more without a story request and RP. ((Rations are roleplay background only, no HUD and no need to actually exchange them. Simply an idea of what sort of exchange of commerce there is. Rations are not used for RPing large trade deals, but an easy way to put in perspective what ‘money’ you have and if you choose to throw it away on whores and such instead of eating… RP that!))
