Mercy Post Apoc Roleplay Sim Landmark
*You must have an approved character to Roleplay. Please wear an OOC tag and appropriate clothing to look around*
Mercy is a post-apocalyptic society roleplay that takes place several decades after the fall of governments and civilizations around the world. The roleplay is based around a town that has rebuilt and flourished, though still a long way from society as we know it. There are few modern conveniences, people depend on one another or live in fear of one another, especially as a new society moves in and tensions are high. A place where water and food can dwindle at a moment's notice, life is not guaranteed. There are no mutants or zombies. The real monsters are, as usual, humans.

War breaks out and the unthinkable happens. War with biological weapons is unleashed all over the world along with the devastation of heavy assault by all forms of weaponry. Most major cities are destroyed beyond recognition. Populations that survived had to find shelter as far from the cities as possible. Lingering virus infections, lack of food and water, looting and lawlessness continue to take more lives and push more survivors further out from small cities and towns. Communications with other countries break down and North America has no outside contact.

Lawlessness breeds structure in the form of three societies: The Towers, The Freelanders & The Rogues. The Towers are technologically more advanced, combining vertical buildings with water filtration and greenhouses built in the sky, medical and research facilities and many advancements. These towers are ruled by greed and power and many of the people are near slaves to the oppressors that live at the top of the towers. Those that live near the bottom, are often underfed and overworked, with no way to leave the Tower. The level you were born in, was the level you were destined to be, there was no advancement in the Tower. Not far from the Towers are those that found a way to settle in the Deadscape. The desolate land of once nowhere, small towns is a harsh place to live. With a little old west mentality, hard work and dedicated people begin to slowly find ways to survive without the greed and oppression of the Towers. The people of the Deadscape that created these societies without the oppression of the towers are called: Freelanders. It's not a perfect life, nor an easy one, but relatively a free one. Believing greatly in that ideal of freedom, some towns rescue people trapped in the towers at great risk to all. The Rogues still travel in packs usually referred to as tribes across the Deadscape, looting towns, murdering travelers and occasionally taking on the Towers. The lack of any structure in their 'society' leaves them an isolated threat. For those that would like to know more, please visit the TED talks page to learn more about the societies.

The Freelanders who settled in towns of the Deadscape continue to improve rudimentary ways of life, enough to slow the population declines, though major advancements are not seen and even small advancements are hard won. The town of Presidio, TX is now known as Mercy for its continuous emancipation of workers trapped in the Tower Societies. The town had the benefit of a large battery that ran power to the town in the evenings, after charging through the day with solar panels. However, in 2052 the battery stopped providing power without anyone in Mercy knowing how to repair it, it's been preserved as many relics of the past, that one day they hope to use again. (more TED talks on the battery if you want to learn more). The viruses have evolved into infections more like the flu, for the most part, allowing it to live on forever with hosts it does not kill. However, with the stopping of the battery, there was a short time in Mercy that infections and deaths ran high in the town due to the water filtration having to be reworked without electricity. The towers have medical knowledge and materials to fight them in their weakened state and many in the towers live a healthy life with good food, water and medicine. Though those in the lower levels are treated more like cattle, inoculated only for the good of the others, worked hard and fed the least.

Some of the Rogue tribes were driven together by necessity and a similar way of life, long enough to take on the Towers in battles that were swift and merciless. Many lost their lives in these attacks and most of the people that lived in the towers were displaced as the Rogues took over many of the great vertical buildings by 2067. Some escaped the towers with the things they could grab and take with them, some with nothing but the clothes on their back. Most of the people in the towers had never experienced a life outside of them. Most of the upper-level tower people had little survival skills and did not know where to go, while the workers and lower-level tower people had been surviving and working hard their entire lives. They also had an advantage, they knew about Mercy. With the takeover of the towers, communications between outlying areas ceased.

After the takeover of the Towers, workers that escaped could find new lives in the Freelander towns, yet the upper-level citizens of the Towers were turned away at the few towns in the Deadscape. Those that governed Mercy saw an opportunity. There was no mistaking the abundance of food, clean water, weapons and medicine the Towers learned to produce through the ideas and education of those on the higher levels of the Towers. The Freelander towns had not been able to achieve anything close to a way of life that might grow a new modern world in this harsh environment. Through negotiation between the council of Mercy, their liaison and the Tower leadership, those oppressors in the Towers had no choice but to integrate with the way of life with those of Mercy...and with those they may have once abused and lorded over or ignored the plight of. Offered protection and accommodations, they agreed to share their wealth of technology and advancements with those of Mercy in a society free of their oppression. The Rogue tribes stayed mostly together in the towers, still marauding when it suited, keeping their slaves in terrible conditions, forcing slavery on those they kept from the upper levels and kidnapping any wayward wanderer or citizens of weakened Deadscape towns. Some Rogues had long turned away from violence, even integrating into Mercy, some never were violent at all and tired of wandering, and still others only wanted to find out Mercy's weaknesses.
