Faces of Our Past

1990 Reunion of Lee High School Classes 1964-65-66

(Parts13-14-15)

A Video by Niles Prestage, LHS '65

Tommy Towery

LHS '64

One of my prized possessions from my Lee High School association is a copy of the VHS video tape Niles Prestage, LHS '65, made during the 25th Reunion get-together which took place in 1990. I am happy that later in my life I converted it to a digital format and was able to upload it to youtube.com. I have shown these video clippings in Lee's Traveller in the past, but now is an appropriate time to once again feature them. Previously they were only shown in five minute clips per week, but since the next reunion is quickly approaching I decided to show them in groups of three (approximately 15 minutes total per week). There are 22 5-minute segments available. Included in these videos are many who are no longer with us, and it is great to once again see their smiling faces and hear their voices.

Thanks to a whole group of you who sent me the email address for Lynne Berry Vallely, LHS ‘70. She has once again been added to my notification email group.

What am I looking forward to for this reunion? One thing is a chance to get a photo I failed to have taken back in 1964.

Do you know what past reunions have meant to me? If I had never gone to any of our reunions I would be missing out meeting on better knowing and becoming friends with some great people I barely knew during my years at Lee. Of course I knew about many of them back then, but we were not the friends we are now. I am talking about (but not limited to) people like John Drummond, Skip Cook, Niles Prestage, Rainer Klauss, Linda Taylor, Jim McBride, and many others. Yes, I knew they were students back then, but we were not true friends.

The other thing I would have missed by not attending reunions was the chance to say a last goodbye to many of my now-departed friends. If I had not attended our reunions the last time I would have seen them would have been back in 1964. Instead I was able to stay in touch with and become better friends with Carolyn McCutcheon, Carol Jean William, Judy Scarborough, David France, Annette McCraney, Bobby Cochran, Terry Preston, Bob MacIlveen, and Bob Crump to start a long list of those I still miss today.  Some of them played major roles in my life. The reunions gave me a chance for one last hug, a kiss on the cheek, or handshake and a honorable good-bye. It removed the "if only I had" feeling I sometimes get when I did not make every effort to do something needed to be done.

If you decided to miss this reunion, the same fate awaits you. We all know we will not live forever, and who knows which of us will make this our last reunion - either because of health issues or worse. Isn't it worth one day in your life to get the opportunity to share a little time with these classmates? This may be your last chance, I repeat.

Please consider spending a few hours to seeing some old friends face-to-face. You will get so much more satisfaction from it than from emails, texts, or Facebook posts.

This Week's Questions, Answers, Comments

Taylor Wtight, LHS '66, "It's a struggle for me to even remember my first boy girl party.I do remember going to some, but the exact times escape me.All I remember about them was that I was very insecure fast dancing and preferred to dance cheek to cheek with the slow dances. It was quite a bit later in my teen years that I gathered the courage to fast dance.
