Deborah Lynn Hardison Cosgriff

August 26, 1947 - January 3, 2020
Deborah Lynn Cosgriff, 72, of Huntsville, passed away Friday, January 3, 2020. Ms. Cosgriff is survived by her two daughters, Penny Cosgriff and Wendy Cosgriff; and her two cats, Jack and Anabelle.
Graveside service was Tuesday, January 7th at Lone Oak Cemetery in Lewisburg, TN. Berryhill Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Arnold Eugene "Gene" Oliver

1945 - January 11, 2020
Arnold Eugene "Gene" Oliver, 74, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at his home in Alabama.
Gene was born to Opal and Reefer Oliver in 1945. Proud of his hometown, he lived there his entire life. Gene was Sergeant for The United States Army, Inducted 1967 - SCD in 1979 earning medals in National Defense Service, Vietnam Campaign and Vietnam Service along with the Combat Infantryman badge.
Gene earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974 and Master of Administrative Science in 1980 from The University of Alabama in Huntsville. Continued his education with a diploma in Management of Defense Acquisition Contracts in 1981 from The United States Army Logistics Management Center in Fort Lee, VA. Always continuing his education with many more achievements; even honored as an Executive Chef. Gene was dedicated to his career as a Contract Specialist for the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal for 20 years; retiring in 2003.
Gene enjoyed life to the fullest, becoming a pro bass fisherman and a diehard Bama fan. ROLL TIDE! He was involved in many charities including Wounded Warriors, Cancer Society and local shelters. Gene was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann and third wife, Francine Coulombe of St. Louis, MO. Gene is survived by step-daughters, Christine Lockwood and Karen Rose of St. Louis, MO as well as Tammie Black, husband Brian Black and fourth wife, Bobbie Gunter of Athens, AL as well as second wife Dung Lightsinger of Williamsburg, VA along with her children Billy and Johnny, whom he loved all so dearly. Military graveside service and burial will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery, Huntsville, Alabama on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 2:30 pm with Pastor, Adam Brewer of Central Church of Christ officiating.
The family appreciates their privacy during this trying time. They would also like to extend their gratitude to Hospice of North Alabama and Home Instead Senior Care for the exceptional care that they provided in his final days.Gene had accomplished a tremendous amount in life and could have done so much more. His time was too short.

Mildred Louise Stroud
Mother of Don Stroud - LHS '64

(Editor's Note: Don wrote saying: "My precious, loving Mother went to be with our Lord this past Sunday. She passed peacefully to be with Daddy on the Streets of Gold. She loved her Lord, her family, her church family, and the many, many friends that she had over the 99 years of her life. Her one disappointment was that she did not make it to her 100th birthday in May. She was an avid reader of your newsletter and often got onto me when I didn’t bring it to her as soon as I printed it for her. Thank you for your dedication. You have given Mom many hours of relaxation and connection to her many children."
Most of you do not know that one of the main reason's I tried to publish the new issue of Lee's Traveller on Saturday night was so Don could print it out and have a copy of it ready for his mother before church each Sunday, even though they are not really due until Mondays.)
Mildred Winkles Stroud 99, went home to be with our Lord on January 12, 2020. A loving wife, mother, Grandmother and friend that taught us to find joy in life’s many blessings. She was preceded by her husband, Robert L. Stroud of 47 years, her parents, William T. and Jessie R. Winkles and sister, Daisy Sublett, two brothers, Robert and Henry Winkles and Grandson, D.J. Yancy.
She is survived by her son, Don Stroud and wife, Mary and their two children Christina Fisher and Elizabeth M. Lockhart (James Lockhart), two Great grandchildren, Allie Fisher and Donald James Lockhart. She was a member of the Henryville United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed many trips with the Springer’s, she served as the treasurer of the United Methodist Women for many years as well as volunteering for many Church committees.
She was a volunteer for RSVP for 25 years at the Court House information desk and worked with meals on wheels program with CASA for many years. Mildred was passionate about helping others and did so before she did for herself. She and Mr. Stroud spent 35 years in Honey Comb Valley fishing and taking care of the many children who came to swim, fish and ski with Mom and Pop Stroud. She loved reading and read her many magazines and newspapers from cover to cover. She retired from NASA after working 23 years working in the contracts department as an accountant. Burial was conducted at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville. Bro: Barry Hallman and Dr. Joey Karr will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial be made to Henryville United Methodist Church 2250 US Highway 431 Guntetrsville, AL 35976
Andan's Bookstore

Here’s an answer to your Traveller query: I’m sure we were all thrilled when Parkway City opened. I gave Andan’s Bookstore, at the south side of the shopping center, a lot of business. I bought quite a few science fiction paperbacks there and also Ian Fleming’s James Bond adventures. Catha’s Hobby Shop opened up a branch on that end, too.
I think Montgomery Ward had a free-standing store at the north end of the shopping center. I wasn’t interested in much of their merchandise (though my parents were). I just remember they had an excellent plastic model section, one that definitely rivaled what Grand News and Gifts had. That beckoning business center, though, was a blow to Huntsville’s downtown economy and brought about a major change in the city.
- Memphis, TN - It has been a bad week for our Fami-Lee and we will miss the ones we lost. I am especially sad at the loss of Don Stroud's mother who was a dedicated Lee's Traveller reader who loved to keep up with the former Lee students through this newsletter.
Last week Sue and I went to get our Real ID driver's licenses and ended up waiting three hours to get them.

Jeffrey Fussell, LHS '66, "I had some confusion on #1 this week. Although I recognized the intro, I associated it with the Venture’s version on their “Telstar” album. I remember Herb Alpert also doing this song. The rest were all very memorable songs.“Lonely Teardrops” by the great Jackie Wilson was a song we tried to learn. It proved to be one where the artist contributed more than the writer to the finished product. We never got to the point where we were happy with it."
