Having cut back on our travel adventures earlier this year, I think we made up for a lot this past week. A short notice opportunity to catch a flight on a military cargo plane saw Sue and me boarding the plane in Memphis at 11am last Thursday. Such flights are available for retired (not just veterans) military members, and we try to take maximum advantage of these opportunities.
We flew to Dover AFB, in Deleware to pick up some cargo and additional passengers, and that was where the problems started. After taxing out for takeoff later Thursday afternoon a broken radio forced us to go back to the turminal for maintenance and eventually had the day's flight canceled. The next day we took off and had to do an air abort for a rear hatch warning light illuminating. Again, a lengthy maintance problem forced us to cancel the flight a second day. We eventually caught a ride with another couple to McGuired AFB,NJ, and finally arrived at Ramstein AFB, Germany late Sunday afternoon.
I could not help but think of our native born German classmates on this trip and wonder about how it really felt to change your entire life by relocating to a whole different contry. I lived in England when I was in the Air Force, but that was only a four year temporary move, and not a permanent change of my who life.
The weather has been beautiful all week and we have thoroughly enjoyed it. On Tuesday we took a militry bus from Ramstein through Southern Germany, through the alps in Austria, and into Vicenza, Italy where we stayed two days at Camp Ederle before taking the return bus back to Germany. In order to get this published on time I need to finish telling the story before some of the events actually happen.
Tomorrow moring we are scheduled for a bus to Switzerland to see the Swiss Alps and visit two beautiful mountain lakes, 10 waterfalls and the resort town of Interlaken. We will not get back until after midnight and at 8:30 the next day we will head out for a visit to Brug Rheinstein to visit a castle and follow that up with a three hour Rhine River Cruise.
On the way home there is a possibility we will stop in Canada to refuel, but that is not decided yet.
Due to the limited internet connection I will have to wait until next week to post some photos.
Memphis, TN - I hope that by the time you are reading this, Sue and I are resting up from a short notice, but long trip as documented in the story above. This issue will be published seven hours earlier than normal, since we are in a time zone putting us seven hours ahead of those of you in Alabama.

Tennis

Does anyone remember taking tennis when Lee was a Jr. High School? I took tennis for last period in Jr. High and we were suppose to be supervised by Mr. Fain if I remember right.I don't know for sure who was in charge.
I do remember several times during my tennis class I just walked off the tennis court and went home early. .I really don't remember anyone out there supervising us, so I got to really enjoying leaving school early. If anyone can add to my recollection, please do so.
The tennis course made me reflect on Cecil Fain our principal . Mr Fain was quite an entrepreneur when it came to education and sports . I am sure many of you already knew this, but I didn't . Many of us and Alabamans are beholding to his contributions to education and sports. I won't continue with his achievements, but if you are curious, look him up on the Internet. I found his story very enlightening,maybe you will too.

May 4, 1928 - Sept 21, 2016
Mr. John Loren Williams, age 88 of Huntsville passed away Wednesday at a local hospital. A native of Huntsville, he was a lifetime member of Jackson Way Baptist Church. John also retired from Thiokol after 40 plus years of service. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his two daughters, Carol Jean Carroll and Kay Fain. He is survived by his loving wife, of 32 years, Montez Williams; two daughters, Cathy Hall, and husband Steve, and Jerolyn Kramer, and husband Chuck; brother, Maurice Williams; eight grandchildren, Jeff Carroll, and wife Lisa, John Carroll, Michael Fain, and wife Annie, John Stringer, and wife Amanda, Mark Fain, and wife Krista, Jason Stringer, and wife Lauren, Paul Hall, and Callie Kramer; thirteen great grandchildren, two son-in-laws, James "Dub" Carroll and Steven Fain; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
