Memphis, TN - I expect there to be a lot of "moans and groans" with this week's quiz. Believe it or not, the products I used for the quiz were ones I really do remember. I had to look them up on youtube to get the correct wording on some of them, but I could have easily made an A on the test. I will welcome feedback from those of you who try it and send me your score.

Sue and I were planning to go to Mardi Gras this week, but with the temperatures forcast to be in the 30's and a 90% chance of thunderstorms on the day of the parade we have postponed our trip till next year. We will still have pancakes on Shove Tuesday.

Those Commercials and Jingles

That Haunt Our Minds

by Tommy Towery

LHS '65

The TV commercial at the top of this page was the first commercial for Kellogg's Pop Tarts, which incidentally were first introduced in 1964. I don't remember ever having one before I graduated from Lee in June of that year. Last week's little quiz got me to thinking about how we were brainwashed with commercial jingles so much in our youth that we can still remember most of them today. I say most, because I know not everyone had a television and was constantly exposed to the ads and saying like last week's "Timex takes a licking and keeps on  ticking" or "LS/MFT -Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco."

Anyway, enough of you wrote to tell me how much you enjoyed the quiz that I decided to make up my own. Here, for the first time is my own original TV and jingle quiz featuring products which I still remember today. Some may be from the Fifties and maybe a few from the Seventies, but most should be familiar to the Sixties group of high school graduates.

As before, I will list the questions, and below will give the answers. I have even found some youtube videos of some of the commercials should you want to go back and see them for yourself. It is okay with me if you want to copy and share this with your friends, even on Facebook.

Subject:        A Band Story

Hi Tommy, wanted to pass along a story that a college friend passed along to me. It is about a band called the K-Otics, a band who missed being the band we remember for "Doubleshot of my baby's love" by one day! At the end of the story there is a link to the Southern Garage Bands site, and then click 60 's Garage Bands for the listing of the different bands. Another band listed was our own Fred Sanders and Eddie Burton's band "The In". You may be familiar with this site, but there is a treasure trove of information about the bands that were popular when we were at LHS. Thanks for keeping us in touch!
