Lee Lunch Bunch October 2019

   It was good to be back at Logan's, but a roaring fire in the 'fireplace room' would have been nice.  At 11:00 p.m. the night before, the temperature in Huntsville had been in  the 70's. By 11:00 a.m. the next morning the temp was in the 30's!!  As always, Logan's did a great job of putting up with us We had 43 attendees for the get-together this time. Some health issues plus the weather kept 9 folks from being able to join us. Linda Weldon and Susan Simms were our long distance attendees this time. They have been making the trip to join us for several years now. We also had several classmates from the Birmingham area brave the nasty weather.... We always enjoy seeing and visiting with each and every one that attends.

    We got up at 6 am on Saturday morning and left the ship about 8:30 am. We made the drive from Mobile just in time to go home and change clothes and head out to the Memphis - SMU football game at the Liberty Bowl Stadium. What a win for the Tigers! We did not get home from there until after midnight. Thank goodness we got an extra hours sleep last night because I was tired.

        Below is my schedule for the frank brown songwriter's festival. The festival starts Nov. 7, however I don't play until the 14th, 15th, and 16th. We had several classmates there last year.  Jeannne and I would love to see any and all of our Fami-Lee there.

Nice restaurant in Gulf Shores. Not sure if you will need reservations.

This is the most desired stage in the Festival. This is where the festival started 35 years ago. You may be able to get tickets in advance, not sure. Cover charges if any are very inexpensive.

The Point Restaurant on Innerarity Point Road

Family style restaurant for many years. The first two shows will be standing room only. Not sure about the Saturday show.

    The writers I will be on stage with have written hit songs for Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, George Jones, Waylon Jennings and many more famous artists. 

Last Week's Name That Tune

    Each  week I have tried to have a common theme to the group of Mystery Songs. Last week's group was a selection of songs we heard or dances we did at Bradley's Cafeteria on the north side of Court Square.

    Jeffrey Fussell, LHS '66  Four of the five jumped right out with their distinctive intros.  Bombed on #3, though – it seems out of character with the rest and I couldn’t quite place it. The theme this week appears to be songs having a title with an associated dance.  Following up to my story about Radio X: Our band is scheduled to play on Friday November 15 at the Mad Malts Tap Room on Maple Avenue just off Meridian St. in Huntsville.

    Number 3 was Charlena by the Sevilles.

    Charlena was made famous for the Lee High folks by the band in which Jerry Brewer played drums, The Continentals. It was much later in my life I found out it was considered a "beach song." The Continentals produced a 45RPM record of it and I bought one from Jerry for $1.00. I'm sure there is a good story about how they did so. It was one of the rare records that somehow just disappeared from my collection.  Sometime after I left Huntsville in 1964 the Continentals changed the name of their band to The Tiks. Here are a couple of their songs. 

    Danielle Kraft posted this on Youtube. "This is the first video I shot with my new phone.. it's shaky in the beginning and it even turns sideways, but it gets better, I promise. The Continentals playing the 1st song they recorded and also covering Suzy Q.. My dad, Bill Rasnake, is rockin' the sax... Jimmy Gentry is on vocals, Johnny Parker on bass, Bucky Harris on guitar, Roddy Taylor and Jerry Brewer on drums."
