Richard Lyons

June 3, 1946 - April 11, 2019

LHS '66

Richard Arlen Lyons died on April 11 at Huntsville Hospital surrounded by his family as he went home to be with his Lord, Jesus Christ. Richard was born June 3, 1946 to Rosco and Ollie Mae Lyons. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Hayes, and his brother, Jimmy Dickerson. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Terri Whatley Lyons; sister, Myra Dillman; brother, Raymond Dickerson; daughters Deede Lyons Jones (Beau) and Amy Lyons Crisler (Alan); grandsons Wyker Jones, Ian Jones, Nate Crisler and Witt Crisler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lyons attended Lee High School (Huntsville), graduated Lawrence County High School, and received a B.S. in Business Administration from Athens State College. He then spent 37 years in the banking industry working for various institutions including: First Alabama Bank in Hartselle and in Livingston, First Federal Savings and Loan of Decatur, and then finished his banking career as President of Colonial Bank in Hartselle. He also served as a Morgan County Commissioner and finished out the final 10 years of his career as Community Development Team Leader for Community Action Partnership of North Alabama. Richard served as Director and Secretary of the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce; as President of the Hartselle Kiwanis and Civitan Clubs; he was a member of the Rotary Club of Hartselle; and he volunteered for Junior Achievement and the United Way of Morgan County. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hartselle where he served as the chairman of the finance committee.

Despite the deep passions he had for his career and community involvement, nothing made Richard happier than playing sports while in high school, and then later attending his grandsons' youth and school sporting events. He was a loving and adoring husband, father, and grandfather. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on his birthday, June 3, at First United Methodist Church, Hartselle. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Action Partnership of North Alabama.

Memphis, TN - I regret to have to announce the loss of another classmate this week. Richard Lyons went to school with many of us, although he did not graduate from Lee. He is listed in the 1964 Silver Sabre as a sophomore, so he would have been a part of the Class of '66.

Spring has been popping in and out all week here in Memphis. One day it is sunny and warm, the next day wet and cold.

As of this moment, Sue and I are making plans to try to attend the Lee Lunch Bunch get together on Thursday. If all goes as planned we hope to see many of you there.

Unchained Melody Rememberances

Last week Spencer Thompson, LHS '64, wrote he liked the Elvis version, but my internet went down and I could not include the song, so here it is:

Richard "Ricky" Simmons, LHS '59-'63, writes, "I forgot about the Elvis Presley version of "Unchained Melody".  My favorite rendition was done by John Gary."

Rod Dixon, LHS '69,  sent us a link to something he saw on Facebook about a Dutch TV show. "Most of the time, when you watch a talent competition, the stage is flooded with young performers hoping to achieve their dreams. The older generations aren’t usually featured as prominently, with youngster stealing most of the TV time. But now, The Voice Holland is switching it up by creating a talent competition entirely for seniors. To participate in The Voice Senior 2018, all contestants must be at least 60 years old. This past August, during a round of blind auditions, the world was introduced to René Bishop, a 71-year-old whose smooth, silky voice took the competition by storm. The senior from Deventer (located in the Overijssel province of the Netherlands) traveled to The Voice Senior auditions hoping to make his life-long dream come true. For his audition, he chose to sing the 1950s song “Unchained Melody.”"

11:00 AM

Attention to all fellow classmates from the classes of ’64, ‘65 and ’66.

Due to a recent lease disagreement between Galen’s and their landlord, Galen’s unfortunately has had to vacate their current location on Andrew Jackson Way. They will hopefully find a new place in that same area very soon. However, our group will need to meet at another location, at least for this time.

Everything else is still the same as far as date and time. Hope to see you all there!
