The Day I Turned 16

I turned 16 on June 8, 1948, when I was living at 718 Stanhope Dr., along with my parents, my sister Ingrid and my brother Karl-Heinz. I remember my parents as fantastic! We rarely heard the words "I love you" - that wasn't a German thing, but there was never a question in our minds that we were anything but loved! A memorable décor item in my room was my bulletin board filled with pictures of my favorite movie stars carefully cut out from my many movie magazines, as well as pictures of friends and other things that were important to me at the time. I considered myself very fortunate to be an American - I was naturalized in 1962, to have a wonderful, loving family and to have fantastic friends!

My best friends were Ginger Gambrell and Linda Gant. We loved going to Panama City Beach with each other's families in the summer. We spent lots of time “hanging out” with Polly Gurley, Cathy Tribble, Gloria Horseman and Chris Grant. The beautiful thing is that we still do that today! We added Paulette Reddick to our circle in 1965, but unfortunately we have lost touch with Linda.

My favorite fun activity was spend-the-night parties with a little yard rolling! I recall one night that we crawled out of my window, pushed my folks' car down the street a ways (so they wouldn't here me crank it) and then took off to roll some yards. Shame on us!!

I loved to watch Peyton Place, the soap opera of our day, on our old Magnavox console TV, complete with record player and radio! Our good friend and neighbor Tom Provost would come over in the evening, Tuesday nights as I recall, and along with my sister and brother we'd lay on the living room floor each week to watch the latest episode.

I loved to listen to the latest hits - Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman was a favorite, as well as any Beatles hit, but I also loved Dean Martin and Andy Williams.

I was looking forward to turning 16 because I would finally be able to get my license!

Up until that day, my best vacation ever had been in 1962 when we went back to Germany for the first time since we left there to come to America more than 10 years earlier. It was great to see family again, and it was also my first time in an airplane! It was a 24-hour flight in a prop plane!

Our family car was a great big old 1957 royal blue Mercury Monterey, but my primary mode of transportation was the city bus. It cost me 10 cents to go to school when I attended St. Mary's through 1962 or to go to town! The McCullough Ave./Locust St. bus came right to our corner twice every hour! I wish we still had that kind of public transportation.

My favorite food was lobster, and if I could eat anywhere I wanted to eat I would go to The Elegant. That was really “going out” at the time! It's been gone a long time! My favorite beverage was a Nehi or Grapico grape drink.

My favorite type of movies were romantic comedies, and I loved all of the Elvis movies!

If I wanted to look good I would wear my pleated knee length or shorter skirt with a matching sweater and hair band and textured hose, and I would put on Chanel No. 5 to smell good.

I thought I was just going to Ginger Gambrell's house with my folks for my birthday, but it turned out that she and her mom had a Sweet 16 surprise birthday party for me up their sleeves! Oh what fun!

My favorite subject in school was math, and I thought I wanted to become a teacher when I graduated from high school. As it turned out, I was actually back at Lee teaching math in 1969, just three years after I graduated from there. It was odd to be on the faculty with so many of the teachers who were there when I was a student.

I can't really remember having a crush on anyone at 16. My first kiss was awkward to say the least!

My favorite group/organization to which I belonged was the German Club. Mrs. Grilliot, the sponsor and German teacher was a sweet, sweet lady who gave me much more credit than I deserved. I kept in touch with her throughout the years until her death.

Lee Lunch Bunch

Meets April 30th

Another reminder regarding the upcoming Lee Lunch Bunch Thursday, April 30th, at 11:00 a.m. at Logan's on Balmoral Dr., in the far left corner of the restaurant. They will have the room ready for us by 11:00 and would like to begin taking orders at 11:30. We need to give them a "ballpark" headcount the day before so they can set up the room accordingly and if we can get 30 or so to attend we usually have the whole room to ourselves. So if you are planning, or even thinking about planning, to attend please let me know by FB, e-mail (njkincaid@hotmail.com), carrier pigeon, smoke signal, etc.. So mark those calendars and spread the word! Hope to see a bunch of you there!

I ran across this today and thought you might could use it. I scanned the pages and they are attached hereto.

It was printed in black and write on rough paper and most of the pages were not straight. It had a black tassel that can't be seen on the scans. There were several blank pages designated for autographs but I did not get any as all my pages remain blank.

I can't say I remember the event but I must have been there as I have this copy of the program.

April is here so I thought some of our classmates might like to comment.

2015 Reunion Plans

Greetings Fellow Classmates of 1964/1965/1966

Plans are underway for the upcoming "joint" class reunion. As most of you know, these three classes have celebrated class reunions together several times over the years, usually at 10 year intervals. Beginning with the 2000 reunion it was decided that we would schedule a joint reunion every five years. This has proved to be beneficial for many reasons, but the greatest benefit is being able to see so many of our classmates at the same time!

Since the class of 1964 held their own 50th Reunion last year - which all of us were invited to help them celebrate - there has been a misconception by some folks that each class will be scheduling their own 50th Reunion and the joint reunion of the past will not take place. To put everyone's mind at ease, the reunion being planned this year will be just like the joint reunions of previous years. But since 2015 also happens to be the class of 1965's 50th year reunion, we are going to tailor the reunion program to give them more time to focus on their class. Sound fair? Good!

One of the first steps we need to do is make sure we have updated information on all classmates.....whether they plan to attend the reunion or not. An e-mail address has been set up for each class. While several class committee members will be assigned to help monitor their specific e-mail address, the name of only one class member will show up when an e-mail is sent .

But there will still be folks that we will not reach, so this is where good old "word of mouth" comes into play. PLEASE help us spread the word by sharing all the information we will be sending out. We also want to include those that may have attended Lee, but for various reasons did not get to graduate with us. So anyone you know that might be interested in joining us this year, please have them send their information to the "class e-mail address" they would have been a part of.
