Faces of Our Past

1990 Reunion of Lee High School Classes 1964-65-66

(Parts 7-8-9)

A Video by Niles Prestage, LHS '65

Tommy Towery

LHS '64

One of my prized possessions from my Lee High School association is a copy of the VHS video tape Niles Prestage, LHS '65, made during the 25th Reunion get-together which took place in 1990. I am happy that later in my life I converted it to a digital format and was able to upload it to youtube.com. I have shown these video clippings in Lee's Traveller in the past, but now is an appropriate time to once again feature them. Previously they were only shown in five minute clips per week, but since the next reunion is quickly approaching I decided to show them in groups of three (approximately 15 minutes total per week). There are 22 5-minute segments available. Included in these videos are many who are no longer with us, and it is great to once again see their smiling faces and hear their voices.

I never planned it when I was in high school, but over time I became a DJ. My interest in music goes back to the dances and to Carter's Skateland when I was growing up. In college I was a DJ on the university's radio station. In the Air Force, I was inspired by a local "Oldie Goldie" DJ who played that wonderful music from my past. I bought a 100-record jukebox and proceed to fill it with 45 RPM records I found in thrift stores and yard sales. I continued well past the 100 records needed for the jukebox and before I stopped I had acquired almost 3,200 vinyl 45 RPM records and over 100 33 1/3 RPM albums which filled a dozen special made travel cases I had built. With such a collection, I began to be asked to DJ at my Air Force squadron parties and eventually started playing them on weekends in the base service clubs and at events such as wedding receptions. I even earn some money from doing so. I had a 300 watt amplifier and massive Kenwood speakers and duel Sony turntables I acquired from Guam and Thailand during my overseas trips to blast out the sounds. I devised a Rolodex system listing all my songs in alphabetical order and folks would look through them to make requests. When CDs became popular I started collecting them and found the 45s redundant, so with great sadness I sold them to a jukebox collector in Arkansas.

As digital music became popular I converted all my CDs to MP3 files and continued acquiring more and more songs for my nostalgic collection. I currently possess an external hard disc drive filled with 140GBs of music. By normal figures, that equates to 43,680 songs – but many of them are duplicates because many of the groups have “best of” or “year favorites” songs included in some collections. Still, that is a lot of songs.

I will be the DJ for the music for this reunion. I won’t offer to play “Stump the Band” with you, but if you have a favorite song you wish to hear again, then fill out the form below and I will do my best to make it available for the dance/listening area in one of the pavilions we will occupy. So, think back to your days of WAAY radio and nights at Carter’s Skateland, the private kissing/dancing parties, the Aquatic Club, the National Guard Armory, the Madison County Coliseum and of course Bradley’s Cafeteria days and pick some favorite tunes you wish me to play. Otherwise, I will just play my favorite ones.

I promise the songs will not be played so lound you cannot still talk and visit with your frineds.

This Week's Questions, Answers, Comments

Lynne Berry Vallely, LHS ‘70, "How can I subscribe to this?  I used to get it but it seems to have dropped off at some point.  It's GREAT and I really appreciate the work that you put into it."

(Editor's Note: I could not contact Lynne to tell her since I did not collect her email address. In response to this, I have added an optional option for people to include their email address for answers."

David Mullins, LHS ‘64, "I really hate to hear about Miss Annalee and George,  wow so many memories."
