Don't Knock the Rock

Tommy Towery

LHS '64

I've been cleaning up some old hard drives in my "getting rid of stuff" moment and in the process I came across the above Lee's Traveller clipping. Someone sent it to me a long time ago and I apologize to whoever sent it because I don't remember who you are. I also do not know what year it was either since the year part of the date was cut off in the clipping.

I will say it was after 1964 since I was still editor of the paper then and it was not done in my time. Since the second paragraph talks about members of the class of '65 being alumni, my guess is it was probably 1966. I don't recognize any of the students in the photo either.

I get a little smile seeing it lasted from ten o'clock to eleven-thirty. But, I guess it started to snow and that may have cut things short.

So...I am putting this out there for some of you to fill in the blanks. Did you go to this dance featuring The Hi-Boys? Who did you go with? What else can you share about this "sock hop" which you youngsters held? Was it 1966?

If you remember some songs from this dance then please add them to the song form near the bottom of this page, or if you have any personal stories about the Hi-Boys let's hear them.

I have cut this issue a little short since I am in the process of working on a large task with my computer and it has been copying files almost non-stop for over a week now. I look at the floor around me and see 14 hard disk drives which I am trying to consolidate into one drive. It seems every time I upgraded a hard drive on any of my computers I kept the old ones "just in case". Well, since it has been over 10 years for some of them and I have never had to rescue them from my closet of stuff, it is time for them to go

Comments on Last Week's Issue

Dianne McClure, LHS '64, "Stuff I once owned and reluctantly got rid of includes the stereo that was the first piece of furniture Ronnie and I bought,  an antique rocking chair,  a retro-dining room set, and several lp and 45 records. Some stuff I still have which I probably will never use again is a den set, an antique table, some antique french doors, an antique bed frame,  and knick-knacks. There is also a China cabinet and probably a lot of other stuff."

Bob Pierce, LHS '64, 'Stuff I once owned and reluctantly got rid of is my ex but got a much better one. Stuff I still have which I probably will never use again includes my tuba, UmPha, maybe at the mini-reunion if I can find afew brave old tooters..."

High School Dance" - Larry Williams

To accompany the lead story this week, I will share with you an old song which just popped into my head as I was putting this week's issue together.

Larry Williams released "High School Dance" in 1957. Larry Williams (May 10, 1935 – January 7, 1980) was an American rhythm and blues and rock and roll singer, songwriter, producer, and pianist from New Orleans, Louisiana. Williams is best known for writing and recording some rock and roll classics from 1957 to 1959 for Specialty Records, including "Bony Moronie", "Short Fat Fannie", "Slow Down", "Dizzy, Miss Lizzy" (1958), "Bad Boy" and "She Said Yeah" (1959).

Photographic Memories - Who Are They?

Each week I plan to share a group of photos from the 1960 "The General" yearbook without disclosing the names of the individuals. You may stop and try to identify them here, and when you are through you may scroll to the bottom of this page to see the identities of your classmates in the photos.
