Dates - Las Fechas
Listen to the Voki Conversation:
¿Cuándo es la fecha del examen? When is the date of the exam?
Grammar note: The word "del" is a combination of two words - "de" which means "of" and the word "el," which is the masculine form of the article "the." So the word "de" + "el" are combined into one - "del."
This does not happen when the article is feminine (la) - we would use two words "de la" (of the).
El examen es el viernes nueve de diciembre. The exam is on Friday, December nine. (Literal translation - The exam is the Friday, nine of December)
Grammar note: Unless they are at the start of a sentence, the days of the week and months are written in lower case in Spanish.
The Months of the Year - Los Meses del Año
enero January
febrero February
marzo March
abril April
mayo May
junio June
julio July
agosto August
septiembre September
octubre October
noviembre November
diciembre December
Grammar note 1: Unless the months are the first word of a sentence, these are written in lower case.
Grammar note 2: The word "del" in the phrase "los meses del año" is a contracted form of two words: de (of) + el (the, masculine). These two words --a preposition and article -- are combined into one word.
