Son las cuatro y cuarto. It's cuarter after four. (Literal translation - It's the four and quarter).
Huy! Se me hace tarde! Tengo clase de frances. Gracias Gloria. Nos vemos mañana. - Oh no! It's late. I have French class. Thank you Gloria. Will see you tomorrow.
In Spanish, the verb "Ser" (to be) is used for the time -- and these are the 2 verb forms you will use:
Es
Son
The verb form "Es" is used for the question - ¿Qué hora es? - What time is it?
This verb "Es" will also be used in the answer to that question if the time indicated is from 1:00 to 1:59.
¿Qué hora es?
Es la una - it is one o'clock.
Es la una y cincuenta y nueve - It's one fifty nine.
Important: After the verb "es" in the answer, you must use the definite, feminine article "la" (the) before the number.
The verb from "Son" is used for the answer if the time is from 2:00 until 12:59.
¿Qué hora es?
Son las dos - It's two.
Son las doce y cincuenta y nueve - It's twelve fifty nine.
