In everyday conversations, Spanish speakers will often divide the day into 3 rather than 2 categories. We have morning, afternoon, and evening.
The AM period would be from 1:00 a.m. until 11:59 a.m.. The phrase to indicate that time would be "de la mañana" (of the morning).
Son las ocho de la mañana - It is eight in the morning.
The PM period has the categories afternoon and evening.
Afternoon would be between 12:00 p.m. to 7:59 p.m.. The phrase "de la tarde" (of the afternoon) is used to indicate this time.
Son las tres de la tarde - It is three in the afternoon.
Evening-night would start at 8:00 p.m. until 12:59 a.m. The phrase "de la noche" (of the night) is used.
Son las nueve de la noche - It is nine in the evening.
Noon is el mediodía
Midnight is la medianoche
