Introducing Yourself - Yo Soy (I am)
"Yo me llamo" is a very common phrase to introduce yourself. Another option is to say "Yo soy" and then state your name. Listen to the Voki conversation. Notice how the first Voki character, Francisco, introduces himself.
Hola. (Yo) soy Francisco. - Hello. I am Francisco.
Mucho gusto. Me llamo Paulina. - Nice to meet you. I'm called Paulina.
Grammar Note: (Yo) soy means (I) am.
The word "soy" is the first person conjugation for the verb to be - SER.
Spanish has two verbs that mean "to be" - SER (used for descriptions and permanent states) and ESTAR (used for temporary states and for location "to be").
In this chapter, you will learn a little about the verb SER, the permanent "to be." You will also learn more about this verb in chapter 8.
