This site is no longer being updated, as of 16th August 2025.
This is a non-exhaustive & prolly inadequate page. If you think I have missed aything, please contact me asap.
This page will broadly be divided into :
Sports Locations (where you can play)
Sporting Organizations (What handles said sports within campus)
Comps
The campus has a variety of locations for different sports, both official & unofficial. However, We won't be providing location links, these are for you to discover!
It's the largest grounds in the campus, & consists of two football & two cricket grounds (Both grassy); along side some smaller facilities like Pitches, Stands, tracks, etc.
During any sports season, this ground will be occupied by college teams for practice, usually in the mornings & evenings. Other times, it's mostly free, and you're allowed to roam it at any reasonable time - though I'm unsure if you have to register to play. Lightings are available, but afaik, only turned on for official events.
Some HnF & NSO classes under EAA will also take place here.
Some rando facts I know : It has somehow great wifi, even like 200M into the ground. Barring Helipad & secluded parts of the campus, the stars are most visible here. That being said, I wouldn't recommend going in the middle of the night as you might see things you never want to.
This is both an organization and location within campus. I will elaborate on the former in the organizations section. Gymkhana or TSG (Technology Student's Gymkhana) is the official Student Activity Center of the campus : Basically has facilities in regards to smaller sports & Activities.
The Gymkhana consists of a pretty big building (So amazingly described, is it not?) which includes, non-exhasutively :
Indoor badminton Courts (x3)
Decked out gyms (x6) - High demand though, so timings you get might not be what you wanted
Weight-lifting Room
Squash Room
TT & Pool Tables
And more I'm forgetting right now.
All of these require you to be register beforehand.
It also has a pretty big brick foyer (ground) in front of it, which is used for certain official & soc activities.
The backside is often used for informal soc meets, bday celebrations, and faces the Iconic Campus lake.
This is the other main stadium of IITKGP, and is primarily for athletics and other similar sports. It has facilities for that, including 400m Track, Hammer-throw enclosures, and more.
Some NSO events also take place here.
Next to the Gymkhana, this is the main pool of the campus, and is managed by the Technology Aquatics Society (TAS). You will be required to register if you wish to use the pool (500Rs Per year), and all details can be found on the TAS website. Both swimmers & non-swimmers (to learn swimming) are allowed in the shallow area, but the deep-end requires approval. Limited seats.
Also do note that there are a stringent list of rules and regulations, and you will be required to follow them lest you be barred from the pool.
TAS Website : https://tas.iitkgp.ac.in/
The campus also has courts for Tennis, Volleyball & Basketball among other sports I'm prolly forgetting. These are respectively, opposite gymkhana, near LLR Hall, and in PAN loop.
Most of these can be used at your discretion if free. However, they will be occupied most days for NSO & other campus related activities.
Most halls have some unofficial/casual playing areas, and this changes from hall to hall. For freshers, this is what is likely relevant :
LBS : A general field, volleyball court, basketball court, couple badminton courts, a cricket pitch and a couple indoor Table tennis tables are available first come first serve.
SNVH : Badminton Courts, TT Tables, and possibly other I dunno about.
You can also go to different halls & play in their fields, provided it's free and you have friends there: A bunch of my friends used to go to LLR Hall for their football field.
This is moreso a general student body organization, than a sport-specific one. You can learn more about their other functions later on, but right now, in regards to Sports, they organize various competitions for all students, from board games to volleyball.
Their sub-organs are also responsible for dealing with many of the various locations above, including registration
I'm not exactly sure about this, but I believe it comes under Gymkhana authority itself. Most selections for the college teams occurs in Autumn Sem, so do be ready for that.
Many halls also have their own teams for sports, and even socult : primarily to compete in Inter-Hall (GC) competitions. Selections for these are often announced only a couple days before deadline, so be on a lookout for them.
Kinda confusingly, the organising society behind fests also have the same name as the fest. Hence the organizing soc behind the sports fest is called Shaurya. Their biggest event is of course the sports fest (likely in Autumn 25), but they do organize a variety of other events including sport-specific events, and even major E-sports comps.
TAS, Technology Aquatics Soc is the body looking after the campus pool. They deal with its maintenance, registration, and even offer classes. Please visit their website for more info - https://tas.iitkgp.ac.in/
Some socs also organize sports events and such, primarily those related with Social causes or Welfare ones. E-sports and online gaming comps are also held pretty often.
This is a non-exhaustive list of comps organized in KGP, though I might likely miss some given I'm not that deep in the sports scene :
Inter-IIT : Will happen in December, in a different IIT likely. Team selections will be during Autumn, likely around October, but could be earlier.
GC : General Championships. Inter-hall based competitions that happen primarily over the spring sem.
Shaurya Fest : The sports fest of the campus, open to even outside students. Some of its comps will have selections, while others will be free-for-all, do check in advance. Likely in 3rd week of October for 2025.
E - Sports : Organized by a variety of groups, there will be different esports comps (For diff games) throughout the year. Do pay attention to notices, and such, to not miss them
Hall comps : These are comps organized for blocks within the hall itself, and are pretty fun to play in.
Individual Comps : Organized by socs/campus for a variety of reasons. Make sure you pay attention to notices for these.
