Sooooo, this was inspired by Metakgp Guide, but given it's mostly outdated nature, this was made.
First, you're not alone. Pretty much everyone who is coming to college is just as, if not more, clueless as you. People are just amazing at hiding that, and appearing as if they know it all, even when they don't.
Plus, the one thing about IITKGP, which no other IIT can match: its size, ensures you can always find your kind of people, as long as you're willing to look. So you're not alone.
So now, what else? Here's a bulleted list in typical OCD fashion:
Check out these guides for sure but preferably check out all: First Day Timeline , Typical Scams & Things to look out for , What to do before coming here?
Ensure you have all the required documents for academic registration before coming to campus.
You will have to first get a room in your hall (LBS/SNVH-IGH likely), and hence go to said hall directly with docs, and get rooms with friends/randomly.
Make sure you collect your ID card (typically within 3 weeks), and medical booklet (when you register for hall)
If your parents are staying, book a hotel room weeks in advance. Options will be listed under Accommodation Section in What to do before coming here? page.
Humidity is pretty insane, and the weather is extremely unpredictable, so be ready for a lot of sweating & raining.
Please check the map of KGP - Available at Important Locations - Fresher's Guide (Important places for you: LBS/SNVH-IGH Hall, Auditoriums, Ramanujam Complex, Main Building, Restaurants (will update later)).
Most seniors are chill, but until you know them well, interact with a bit of "respect" (Basically how you would talk to your cousin who's like 25. Don't talk like they are freshers- swearing, nicknames, etc.). Honestly, nothing will happen (nothing happened to me), but there's a lot of ppl who have an expectation of formalness/respect, that it's better for you to be safe than sorry.
Join/Create a dept specific group, and do talk with your mentors regularly.
The first year mess food will take some getting used to (& you might not like it), so have some snacks in room, and find out what restaurants you like (or use Zomato/Swiggy). You can also buy fruits/healthy snacks like nuts in fruit stalls in TechM (See Important Locations), or order online via BlinkIt.
Get a bicycle from outside kgp if you can (yours, or buy online), but if not, buy from a good shop (See TechM).
Totos (Electric Autos) in campus are 20 RS per person, unless you're alone in which case it is 40 RS. This is for any location within campus only.
