This is a non-exhaustive list of Social & Cultural (hence socult! Nice na?) Facilities : places, organization, comps & more.
Most of these locations aren't limited to Socult, but that's what a majority of their programmes involve. Like before, locations are for you to discover!
The premier auditorium, atleast for Socult events (Netaji auditorium is bigger, but not as fancy imo).
Many talks, workshops, events and more will be organized here - From technical talks to TedX talks. Some societies will also use this auditorium for their induction programs -> basically their intro to our soc, before the selections happen.
Furthermore, many socult socs (Dramatics, Literary, etc.) will also organize their shows here : whether it is a full society endeavour, or a freshers' based production.
Vikramshila Halls (V1-V4) will be one of the most common areas for society selection, along with any workshops taken by them. Other small campus events will take place here too. During fests, this will become one of the most active parts of the campus, and will be bustling throughout the day.
Do note that they aren't usually open for anyone without prior permission, though you might be lucky.
JCB foyer is a nearby place (Foyer refers to the entrance area before a building, so guess where JCB is), that is often used by Socult societies for their practices and such, since it has none of the above registration requirements. Nukkad finals (SpringFest) took place here last time, and were something to not miss.
Tagore Open Air Theatre, or TOAT, is the campus Amphitheatre, located near the CSE Dept. Many societies have their meets and publi (promotion) start from here. During SpringFest, this becomes one of the most used places for events like "Battle of the Bands". Some official campus & Gymkhana works happen here too, commonly in Spring Sem(for you to discover!).
The main building still has many classrooms (signified by the "F" prefix like F235), which are predominantly used for society selections and meets. The Maggu room is also a pretty common place for many societies to do their work, primarily Business/Finance related socs, but also the debating society (the dogs here prolly can tell you a lot about Philosphy with how common this is).
Gymkhana is more organizationally important for Societies, Given that every officially recognized society, other than cells, falls under the authority TSG - Gymkhana. That being said, this place is still extremely useful for Socult activities. Most societies have informal meets at the back of Gymkhana (facing the lake), and many smaller activities are organized at or around Gymkhana.
If you're in any societies, or if you have friends very excited about your bday, this place will become very well known to you!
This one is not used as much by Societies & such. Instead state organizations, or other campus orgs, often rent out this place for their celebrations, food fests, festivals, general meets, etc.
If you have the chance to go for any such meet, I'd highly recommend it. It might be crowded though, it's a small place.
This is not as cut & clear as sports, and many organizations often collab with each other. Regardless, here are a very rough (& prolly inaccurate) overview of the major types.
These are, effectively, fancy clubs. Fancy in the sense that they are well-structured & organized, instead of being casual groups of students. There are a variety of socs, that can be classified based on level, as well as type of work they do (Broadly & incompletely Socult, Tech, Business). And apologies non-socult socs for putting you under Socult Facilities, but there was nowhere else to.
Socs organize a variety of events, activities, competitions, workshop, misc, and much more for both members of the society, as well as the general public of IITKGP.
See Socs page for more Info (ETA 30th June).
These are organizations meant primarily for preserving cultural traditions & festivals among students of a certain state or community. Do look into this when you arrive, many states/cultures have a cultural association within campus.
Activities they organize include food fests, festival celebrations, general meet-ups, fun nights, and also help connect seniors & freshies. Most are only for members, but certain ones like food-fests are open to everyone in campus.
The gymkhana also organizes socult events and such, often in collaboration with a campus society, or at times within external organizations. These will often be open to all.
Similarly to Gymkhana, the campus too organizes some events, and almost always with outside orgs. These are rare though, since most of socult activities is done by students. They also have certain committees & such to help deal with cultural activities.
See SpringFest under the Fests & Celebrations page for more info. But TL;DR - This is the biggest fest of the campus, and is primarily socult, and involves dozens of activities & competitions.
See Inter-IIT under the Fests & Celebrations page for more info. But TL;DR again - Socult is a major part of Inter IITs, and you can represent IITKGP if you get selected for it. Events change yearly, so do check your emails when the selections start for it.
While most societies primarily organize events & workshops for their members, pretty much every soc has some event or the other that is done for everyone. For most socult socs, this will be their flagship event. Many socs also organize awareness related events, often in part with the campus.
Finally, of course, are the selections. For many socs (primarily Tech), these become competitions/tasks unto themselves, and if you're interested in them, it'll def be fun.
The campus & gymkhana, and also certain socs, also organize external entertainment, such as cultural plays, indian classical music, and other similar events. These will be publicized before they happen, so do check them out.
Some socs, and almost all halls will also organize competitions & such, and most of these will be for raising awareness, or just for having some fun. This include, but it is not limited to comps for Drawing, Storytelling, Board games, general gaming, Singing, etc.
