This guide was inspired by & partially taken from the Freshers Packing guide at metakgp, made by Pankhuri Saxena (HS '22) initially.
There is no inherent ranking, even though the list is numbered.
This is in no way a complete list, and is subject to change.
Your documents (Aadhar, ID, Relevant Certificates, Admission letter, Passbook if there, etc.)
A smart-phone, one that can take photos & read links. Half the stuff is online nowadays. Preferred Sim is Airtel. Jio is okay. VI is just manageable. BSNL is not a good idea.
Clothes (Being naked is illegal, just in case you forgot). A couple formal shirts, and trad-wear will also be helpful for any activity you might get involved in.
Snacks & Food, you'll need it as you get adjusted to mess food.
Utensils and other equipment for eating food (Ok I said equipment just cause of how weird it sounds).
A kettle (technically not allowed, but just make sure it's below a 1000 Watts): it's a lifesaver.
Laptop if possible. (See Recommendations)
Anti-Insect stuff, especially for ants & mosquitos. Will be needed if you want to protect even your electronics.
Decent shoes & slippers. You will be surprised how much walking is there in the campus, even with a cycle.
Umbrella & raincoat, rain will be an ass the first couple months.
Cycle. This can be bought here but the prices are inflated & quality is usually not great. If you can't bring from home, buy it online & assemble (Worth it), and if that can't be done, then only buy it locally (Campus or nearby). There's one shop that some people recommend in campus: A seasonal shop that opens opposite TechM in Kazi Nazrul Centre. Apparently good variety, reasonable prices, and decent quality.
Toiletries/Beauty Products: soap, shampoo, handwash, soap, detergent, toothpaste, toothbrush, deo, comb, nailcutter etc. Most will be available at General store or TechM, but not all brands are available nor are cheap. More rarer/costlier brands are likely unavailable, though online services will have it.
Meds: painkillers, something for fever or coughs, diarrohea and vomiting, ORS. Again available in TechM, but better to have it in hand. A First aid kit for like 200 Rs will be useful too.
Towels & other clothes for cleaning you & the room.
Bag & a couple pens/books. Anything else can be bought here.
Bed stuff: Mattress, pillows & bedsheets. Preferably buy them from TechM and not general store (high prices). Best case, bring from home, but savings is not worth the hassle, in my opinion.
Stationery: Pens, Books, Eraser, etc. Most can be both in your hall at MRP, or in TechM for cheaper. Certain books are only available in TechM.
Calculator. Yes, we spent 12 years learning how to do shit mentally, only for calcs to now be allowed (even in exams).
Laundry Related: Hangers, clotheslines/Drying Board, hanging clips, laundry basket, Detergent.
Toilet stuff: Mug, Bucket, Soapbox, etc.
Room stuff: Dustbin, Shelves, baskets, Broom, wall-hooks etc.
Electricals: ethernet cable if you have a laptop (both speed & access is great), extension/multi-plugpoints if you need more than two at a time.
Water bottle. You will not survive here without it, especially the first few months. Water filters are there in every building, or you can have Bisleri cans in your room, your wish.
Laptop. This will become a necessity soon enough, but right now, you can just about manage without one, though it isn't recommended (buy during some sale asap). Most courses will have materials (Slides, assignments, mails) online, and finding them & using them is much easier with a laptop. You do have the option of using KGP's computers for any project needing a computer (Which is why laptops aren't a necessity yet).
Personally, I'd recommend buying one that has pretty decent RAM & CPU, and if possible a decent GPU. However, if you plan to take it to classes, lighter is always better than specs in my opinion.
Room Decos : These include Xmas/Diwali Lights, Posters, Wallpaper, Writings, Lighting, etc. While not needed, they make the place feel like home.
Things related to your interests (Sports/Instruments/Etc). Kgp does have some shops but they are not expansive/high quality, so only other option is ordering it online.
Table Fan. You can try coolers too, but won't work that well in the humidity. The fan won't save you, but it will help.
Will Update more later.
