Capítulo 5 

En el umbral de una nueva vida, comprendí que mi trabajo espiritual me ayudaría a ver más allá del dolor y del odio. Me inscribí en una academia de meditación, donde me enseñaron a mirar en mi interior, allí donde está escondida la sabiduría del ser humano. Atravesé el sendero de la soledad, la amargura y el dolor antes de iniciar un nuevo camino, lleno de reconciliación y de amor.

Chapter 5

On the threshold of a new life, I understood that my spiritual work would help me see beyond the pain and hatred. I enrolled in a meditation academy, where they taught me to look inside of me, where the wisdom of human being is hidden. I crossed the path of loneliness, bitterness and pain before starting a new path, full of reconciliation and love.

Pasado un mes, parecía que a José Daniel se lo hubiera tragado la selva. Día a día aumentaba la preocupación de Bashira, quien se sentía culpable. No lo pensó más y decidió que esa misma semana viajaría a la frontera de Panamá con Colombia. Solo a su amiga Berna le comentó acerca del viaje. Ella se opuso a que viajara sola y, después de una acalorada discusión, logró convencerla de que la acompañara Ruth, una de sus secretarias en la agencia de bienes raíces. Por su parte, a la chica le pareció una formidable aventura.

After a month, it seemed as if José Daniel had been swallowed by the jungle. Day by day the concern of Bashira, who felt guilty, increased. She didn't think about it anymore and decided that that same week she would travel to the border of Panama to Colombia. She only told her friend Berna about the trip. She objected to her traveling alone and, after a heated argument, he managed to convince her to bring Ruth, one of her secretaries at her real estate agency, with her. For her part, the girl thought it was a formidable adventure.

Capítulo 10

A pesar de que David conocía la selva, Juan Aguilar contrató a un guía. El indígena guiaba al grupo por la selva darienita, en medio de ellos iban Juan y Ruth. Esta última estaba impresionada por el entorno inhóspito. En un inicio pensó que se trataba de una excursión; ahora la inclemencia del clima y los insectos la habían hecho cambiar de opinión. A lo lejos se escucharon disparos. David les hizo señas para que se tiraran al suelo. Juan siguió las instrucciones de inmediato y le gritó a Ruth que lo hiciera. Ella estaba aterrada y solo atinó a sentarse. El guía escapó y los dejó abandonados en medio de la selva.

Chapter 10

Even though David knew the jungle, Juan Aguilar hired a guide. The indigenous man was leading the group through the Darien jungle, in the middle of them were Juan and Ruth. The latter was impressed by the inhospitable environment. At first she thought it was an excursion; now the inclement weather and the insects had made her change her mind. Shots were heard in the distance. David made signs for them to get on the ground. Juan followed the instructions immediately and yelled at Ruth to do it. She was terrified and only managed to sit down. The guide escaped and left them abandoned in the middle of the jungle.

Era imposible no notar el dolor con que pronunciaba estas palabras. Incapaz de exponer una frase que cerrara la conversación, entendió el silencio tanto que el escritor optó por cerrar sin decir nada más. Ella, presa de un amargo sentimiento, se quedó un rato aún con el teléfono en la mano, colgada.

Chapter 10

It was impossible to not notice the pain with which he pronounced these words. Unable to say a phrase that would end the conversation, he understood the silence so much that the writer chose to close without saying anything else. She, prisioner of a bitter feeling, stayed for a while still with the phone in her hand, hanging up.

Chapter 4

Two weeks passed and with them emerged a routine of sorts. Every morning I would arrive at Granta House at eight, call out that I was there and then, after Nathan had finished helping Will dress, listen carefully while he told me what I needed to know about Will’s meds – or, more importantly, his mood.

Pasaron dos semanas en las que se estableció cierta rutina, más o menos. Todas las mañanas yo me presentaba en Granta House a las ocho, anunciaba que había llegado y, una vez que Nathan había ayudado a Will a vestirse, escuchaba con atención mientras me explicaba lo que tenía que saber acerca de sus medicinas... o, más importante aún, su estado de ánimo.

But Will just stared at me for a bit and, when I didn’t look away, he let out a small breath, as if about to say something unpleasant. 

‘Fair enough,’ he said, and he turned the wheelchair round. ‘Just put the photographs in the bottom drawer, will you? All of them.’ And with a low hum, he was gone.

Pero Will solo me miró durante un momento y, como no aparté la vista, dejó escapar un pequeño suspiro, como si estuviera a punto de decir algo desagradable. 

—Vale —dijo, y la silla dio la vuelta—. Pero deja las fotografías en el cajón de abajo. Todas. Y con el grave murmullo de siempre desapareció. 

Chapter 11

There are places where the changing seasons are marked by migrating birds, or the ebb and flow of tides. Here, in our little town, it was the return of the tourists. At first, a tentative trickle, stepping off trains or out of cars in brightly coloured waterproof coats, clutching their guidebooks and National Trust membership; then, as the air warmed, and the season crept forwards, disgorged alongside the belch and hiss of their coaches, clogging up the high street, Americans, Japanese and packs of foreign schoolchildren were dotted around the perimeter of the castle. 

Capítulo 11

En algunos lugares los cambios de las estaciones llegan acompañados de pájaros migratorios o del flujo y reflujo de las mareas. Aquí, en nuestro pequeño pueblo, llegan acompañados de turistas. Al principio, unos grupillos cautelosos, que bajaban de los trenes o de los coches con impermeables de colores chillones, agarrados a guías de viaje y carnés del National Trust; a continuación, a medida que el tiempo mejoraba y comenzaba la temporada, llegaban, desperdigados entre el estruendo de los autocares, abarrotando la calle mayor, estadounidenses, japoneses y grupos de colegiales extranjeros, que cercaban el perímetro del castillo. 

Chapter 11

‘If you’d bothered to ask me, Clark. If you’d bothered to consult me just once about this so-called fun outing of ours, I could have told you. I hate horses, and horse racing. Always have. But you didn’t bother to ask me. You decided what you thought you’d like me to do, and you went ahead and did it. You did what everyone else did. You decided for me.’ 

I swallowed. 

‘I didn’t mean to –’ 

‘But you did.’ 

He turned his chair away from me and, after a couple more minutes of silence, I realized I had been dismissed.

—Si te hubieras tomado la molestia de preguntarme, Clark. Si te hubieras tomado la molestia de consultarme acerca de esta divertidísima excursión al menos una vez, te lo habría dicho. Odio los caballos y odio las carreras de caballos. Desde siempre. Pero no te tomaste la molestia de preguntar. Decidiste qué me gustaría hacer y fuiste y lo organizaste. Has hecho lo que todo el mundo hace. Has decidido por mí. 

Tragué saliva. 

—No pretendía... 

—Pero lo has hecho. 

Alejó la silla de mí y, al cabo de un par de minutos más de silencio, comprendí que me estaba pidiendo que me fuera.
