Joe Nolan

Flat jockey Joseph (Joe) Nolan rode as an apprentice and then a professional between 1952 and 1965, amassing a total of 13 winners.

He served his apprenticeship with Atty Persse at Upper Lambourn and rode his first winner on the Persse-trained Teefin is the Cosmopolitan Cup at Lingfield on Saturday, May 17, 1952, beating the Charlie Smirke-ridden favourite Galen by half a length. It would turn out to be the most important success of his career. He rode two more winners that season, both on Tarantus, at Sandown in June and at Liverpool in November. Tarantus also provided him with his sole success of 1953 when landing an apprentices’ handicap at Alexandra Park.

Joe completed his apprenticeship in 1954 and rode as a fully-fledged professional from thereon. He joined Fulke Walwyn’s stable and struck up a good partnership with an equine character named Scottish Sands. The son of Scottish Union used to pull tremendously hard but Joe found the key to handling him and went on to record six victories between 1956 and 1958 over trips from five furlongs to a mile and a half.

Joe then joined Upper Lambourn trainer Major Peter Nelson and won a pair of three-year-old maiden races for him in 1960, on Commandeer at Chepstow in May and Sweet Ration at Birmingham in July. However, his time with Major Nelson was comparatively short, for he then joined Compton trainer George Beeby in 1961.

Three years after his win on Commandeer at Chepstow, Joe returned to the Welsh track for the corresponding meeting and rode the heavily gambled Miss Daynor, backed down from 10-1 to 7-2, to victory in the Blakeney Plate for two-year-old fillies. The daughter of Polic had cost Beeby 800 guineas as a yearling at Newmarket October Sales.

That turned out to be Joe’s last winner, although he continued to hold a licence for two more seasons.
