Hugh Nugent

1878 - 1903



Charles Hugh Nugent, the son of trainer Sir Charles Nugent and always known by his second name, was born at Market Harborough on May 18 1878 and enjoyed his greatest success in the saddle on Hidden Mystery in the 1899 Grand Sefton.


He finished second on his father's Drumcree in the 1901 Grand National.


His father once rode five winners in one afternoon at Streatham.


Tragically, Hugh was killed when Red Dragon of Wales fell in a hurdle race at Ostend on August 31, 1903. He left £1,036.
