George Nicoll

1910 - 1938

George William Alexander Nicoll was born in Johannesburg where he was apprenticed to J Russell.

Having ridden over 300 winners in South Africa, he came to Britain in 1933 and won that year's Cambridgeshire on Raymond.

In January, 1938, George was found dead in his home at The Studio, Newmarket. At the inquest, his father-in-law said he had entered the house and found Nicoll in an armchair wearing a gas mask inside which one end was attached to a gas pipe. A verdict of suicide ‘while the balance of his mind was disturbed’ was recorded.

He left a widow and a two-year-old daughter and was said to have been desperate for money in his last days.
