Percy Niker

Percy William Niker’s career was very much bound up with a horse called The Antelope II. The gelding provided him with his first ride and his only winner, as well as his one opportunity over the Liverpool fences.

Like the rider, The Antelope II was also making his racecourse debut when they teamed up for the Sefton Chase at Newbury on January 17, 1923, finishing unplaced. Other jockeys then took over for the horse’s next four starts before they were reunited for the Stanley Chase at Liverpool on March 22, where they finished a creditable fourth.

More than two years elapsed before they finally won a race together, when coming home alone in the Llangibby Selling Handicap Chase at Newport on Whit Monday, June 1, 1925, their two rivals both having failed to get round.

Percy Niker’s last ride was on Chain Hill, unplaced in the Shottesbrook Novices’ Hurdle at Hawthorn Hill on October 20, 1925.
