Albert Newey

Albert Newey had one win in 1912 but lost it in the stewards’ room. He then had to wait until 1925 to pass the post in front again, but at least this time he kept the race, and he went on to record three more wins before the year was out.

Born in 1895, the younger brother of leading National Hunt and Grand National-winning  jockey Alf Newey, Albert finished first on Modder River in the Juvenile Selling Hurdle at Haydock Park on December 17, 1912, but Tom Goswell, who had been beaten a length on Brigand’s Daughter, objected to the winner on grounds of crossing and was awarded the race. Albert had no further chances on Modder River as the gelding was claimed after the race.

He did not ride in Britain between 1913 and 1919 but the long wait for a first victory finally ended on February 9, 1925 when riding the odds-on favourite Lady Jaquenetta to a decisive 20-length win in the Sawley Selling Hurdle at Derby, just two days after finishing third on her at Manchester. The amateur jockey Morgan Blair, who finished second to her in the Derby contest, subsequently bought the four-year-old and Albert never rode Lady Jaquenetta again.

However, he was able to celebrate another winner when Trusty, trained by his brother Alf, won the Lowdham Handicap Hurdle at Southwell on September 18, 1925. They followed up three days later in the Croome Handicap Hurdle at Pershore by three lengths. The hat-trick was duly completed on September 28 at Wolverhampton with another three-length win in the Bushbury Selling Handicap Hurdle. Trusty was sold at the post-race auction.

Albert had his last ride on Wyndcliff, unplaced in the Abbeydore Hurdle at Hereford on Easter Monday, April 19, 1927, ending his career with just those four wins.
